Chapter 16 – The Woman Who Wrote Evelyn’s Story

The facility went silent.
Not because the alarms stopped.
Not because the explosions ended.
But because everyone was focused on one person.
Dr. Helena Voss.
She walked through the smoke like she belonged there.
Like the chaos around her was simply part of a plan she had already completed.
Evelyn kept her weapon raised.
"Stop."
Helena smiled.
"Still the same."
Evelyn's eyes narrowed.
"What does that mean?"
"You always choose protection before questions."
A pause.
"Even when the questions are the only thing that can save you."
Evelyn didn't lower the weapon.
"You took my daughter."
Helena glanced at Lily.
"No."
"You did."
"I revealed her."
The answer made Evelyn's expression change.
"She's a child."
"Exactly."
Helena stepped closer.
"And that is why everyone underestimated her."
Marcus moved beside Evelyn.
"Dr. Voss."
Helena looked at him.
"You know who I am."
"I know enough."
"Do you?"
Her smile widened.
"Because most people who studied my work never understood it."
She looked around the facility.
"The Carter Project was never about creating a weapon."
A pause.
"It was about preventing one."
Evelyn frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
Helena looked directly at her.
"You."
The word echoed.
Again.
"You keep saying that."
Evelyn's voice was cold.
"Everyone keeps telling me I'm something I'm not."
Helena nodded.
"Because you don't remember."
"Remember what?"
"The beginning."
Evelyn felt uneasy.
"What beginning?"
Helena looked at Thomas.
"Tell her."
Thomas didn't move.
"Tell her what happened when she was born."
Evelyn turned toward her father.
"Thomas."
For the first time...
He looked ashamed.
"When you were born, the doctors noticed something unusual."
Margaret closed her eyes.
"Thomas..."
"No more lies."
He looked at Evelyn.
"You had abnormal neural activity."
Evelyn stared.
"Meaning?"
"Your brain developed differently."
Marcus frowned.
"That doesn't mean anything."
Helena interrupted.
"It means she could process information faster than normal."
"Patterns."
"Behavior."
"Threats."
A pause.
"Before she was old enough to understand what they were."
Evelyn shook her head.
"That's impossible."
Helena smiled.
"Yet you've spent your entire life doing it."
Evelyn remembered.
Every operation.
Every decision.
Every moment she knew something was wrong before anyone else.
She always called it instinct.
Maybe it wasn't.
Helena continued.
"Thomas wanted to control it."
Margaret looked away.
"He turned our daughter into a project."
Thomas's expression hardened.
"I was trying to protect her."
"No."
Margaret's voice broke.
"You were afraid of her."
Silence.
Evelyn looked between them.
Her parents.
Both had different versions of the same lie.
Helena walked toward the sealed steel door.
"The world is changing."
Marcus followed carefully.
"What is behind that door?"
Helena smiled.
"The original research."
"The reason the Order exists."
She placed her hand on the scanner.
The door remained locked.
Then she looked at Evelyn.
"Open it."
Evelyn didn't move.
"No."
Helena tilted her head.
"You don't even know what you're refusing."
"I know enough."
"No."
Helena smiled.
"You know what everyone told you."
A pause.
"But you don't know what your own mind remembers."
Evelyn felt a strange pressure.
A memory.
Not clear.
Just fragments.
A room.
White walls.
A voice.
A woman saying:
"Remember this face."
She touched her temple.
Helena noticed.
"You feel it, don't you?"
Evelyn stepped back.
"What did you do to me?"
"Nothing."
Helena answered.
"That's the part nobody understands."
A pause.
"We didn't put anything inside you."
"We only removed what was stopping you."
Evelyn's expression changed.
"What?"
"Your memories."
The room went silent.
Marcus looked at her.
"Evelyn?"
Helena continued.
"When you were seventeen, you discovered the truth."
"No."
"You found your father's files."
"No."
"You learned about the Carter Project."
Evelyn shook her head.
"I would remember."
Helena smiled sadly.
"That's why we removed it."
A chill moved through Evelyn.
"What did you do?"
Thomas looked away.
Margaret started crying.
Evelyn looked at her.
"You knew."
Her mother whispered:
"Yes."
The betrayal felt fresh.
Like another wound.
"You erased my memories."
Margaret shook her head.
"No."
"Then who?"
Helena answered:
"I did."
Evelyn raised her weapon.
"You."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because you were going to destroy yourself."
Evelyn laughed.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"No."
Helena looked at Lily.
"I expect you to believe her."
Everyone turned.
Lily stood quietly beside Evelyn.
The little girl looked at Helena.
Then whispered:
"Mommy..."
"What?"
"I remember the room."
Evelyn froze.
"What room?"
"The white room."
The blood drained from Evelyn's face.
"Lily..."
The child continued.
"I saw you there."
A pause.
"You were crying."
Evelyn's hands trembled.
"Before I was born?"
Lily nodded.
"No."
She looked at her mother.
"When I was inside Grandma's house."
Nobody spoke.
Because that made no sense.
Then Helena smiled.
"Now you understand."
Evelyn looked at her.
"Understand what?"
Helena's expression became serious.
"That Lily isn't just your daughter."
A pause.
"She's the only person who can unlock the memories you lost."
The facility shook again.
The countdown continued.
00:01:30
Marcus looked at the timer.
"We need to move."
But Evelyn didn't.
Because she was staring at Lily.
Her daughter.
The child everyone wanted.
The child everyone feared.
And suddenly...
She remembered something.
A sound.
A voice.
Her own voice.
Whispering to a little girl.
"If anything happens to me, remember the door."
Evelyn stepped back.
"No..."
Helena smiled.
"Welcome back."
"What?"
"Your memories are returning."
The timer reached:
00:01:00
Thomas looked terrified.
"Evelyn."
She turned.
"Yes?"
His voice was almost a warning.
"You need to decide."
"Decide what?"
He looked at Helena.
"Whether you trust the woman who erased your memories..."
"Or the father who lied your entire life."
The countdown continued.
00:00:45
Helena walked to the door.
"Choose carefully."
"Because when that door opens..."
"The world will learn what Evelyn Carter was created to become."
The timer flashed.
00:00:30
And Evelyn realized the truth.
Everyone had been waiting for her to choose.
May you like
But nobody had asked the only question that mattered.
What did Evelyn choose before she forgot?
