Chapter 15 – The Architect of Everything

The words flashed across the screen.

PHASE THREE HAS BEGUN.

Then darkness.

Complete silence.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Not Evelyn.

Not Marcus.

Not even Thomas.

Because for the first time since this nightmare began...

Her father looked afraid.

Not pretending.

Not calculating.

Afraid.

Evelyn noticed.

And that scared her more than anything.

"You know her."

Thomas didn't answer.

Evelyn stepped closer.

"You know who that woman is."

Still nothing.

Her voice became colder.

"Answer me."

Thomas looked at Lily.

Then back at Evelyn.

"Her name is Dr. Helena Voss."

Marcus immediately reacted.

"Helena Voss?"

Thomas nodded.

"You've heard of her."

Marcus's expression changed.

"Everyone in intelligence has."

Evelyn looked at him.

"Who is she?"

Marcus hesitated.

That hesitation told Evelyn enough.

"Marcus."

He sighed.

"She was considered one of the smartest strategic analysts in the world."

"Was?"

"She disappeared twenty years ago."

Evelyn looked at the screen.

"But she didn't."

"No."

Marcus shook his head.

"She went underground."

Thomas gave a bitter smile.

"Underground is where she built everything."

Evelyn looked at him.

"Blackridge."

"Yes."

"The Order."

"Yes."

"The Carter Project."

Thomas lowered his eyes.

"Yes."

The answers came too easily.

Almost like he was tired of hiding.

Evelyn stepped forward.

"So she created all of this."

Thomas looked at her.

"No."

A pause.

"She created me."

The room went silent.

The glass chamber holding Lily suddenly unlocked.

Everyone turned.

Lily ran out.

Straight into Evelyn's arms.

The moment her daughter touched her, everything else disappeared.

The secrets.

The lies.

The betrayal.

For a few seconds...

There was only her child.

"I'm sorry, Mommy."

Evelyn held her tighter.

"No."

"I should have protected you."

"No."

Lily shook her head.

"You came back."

Those four words almost broke Evelyn.

Because that was all Lily wanted.

Not perfection.

Not answers.

Just her mother.

Evelyn kissed her forehead.

"I'll always come back."

Behind them, Thomas watched silently.

Then he said:

"You see why they need you?"

Evelyn looked up.

"Don't."

"You think love makes you weak."

A pause.

"But it's exactly what makes you dangerous."

She narrowed her eyes.

"Explain."

Thomas walked toward the glass.

"They trained me to remove emotion."

"They trained me to calculate."

"They trained me to see people as pieces on a board."

He looked at Lily.

"But then I watched you."

Evelyn said nothing.

"You were different."

"Different how?"

"You made choices no logical person would make."

"You sacrificed yourself for strangers."

"You trusted people who betrayed you."

A pause.

"You loved someone who wasn't worthy of it."

Evelyn glanced at Grant.

He looked away.

Thomas continued.

"They wanted a perfect strategist."

"But they accidentally created something they couldn't control."

"What?"

Thomas looked at her.

"A person who could predict the future..."

"Because she understood humanity."

Evelyn stared.

The words felt impossible.

But part of her understood.

Her ability wasn't magic.

It wasn't a secret weapon.

It was observation.

Experience.

Empathy.

The things Thomas tried to remove.

Suddenly, the facility shook.

An explosion.

Then another.

Marcus moved immediately.

"We need to leave."

Thomas didn't move.

Evelyn looked at him.

"What are you doing?"

"I'm staying."

"Why?"

His eyes moved toward the ceiling.

"Because she came for me."

Another explosion.

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

"We don't have time."

But Evelyn didn't move.

She looked at her father.

The man who destroyed her childhood.

The man who lied.

The man who still somehow saved Lily.

"Why?"

Thomas looked confused.

"Why what?"

"Why did you really keep me alive?"

A long silence.

Then Thomas answered:

"Because I failed once."

Evelyn frowned.

"When?"

"When your mother tried to take you away."

Margaret, who had been silent, looked shocked.

"What?"

Thomas looked at her.

"I knew Helena would find Evelyn eventually."

Margaret whispered:

"So you let me run."

"Yes."

"You let me fake my death."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Thomas looked at Evelyn.

"Because I knew the only person who could stop Helena..."

"Was the daughter she created."

Evelyn felt a chill.

"You mean me."

Thomas nodded.

"Yes."

Another explosion.

The ceiling cracked.

Marcus shouted:

"Now!"

Everyone moved.

Except Thomas.

Evelyn stopped.

"You could come with us."

Everyone looked at her.

Even Thomas.

The offer surprised him.

After everything...

After all the pain...

She still offered him a chance.

Thomas smiled sadly.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because someone has to stop the door from opening."

"What door?"

Thomas looked toward the deepest part of the facility.

"The one Helena wants you to open."

Evelyn followed his eyes.

A massive steel door.

Hidden behind the laboratory.

"What is behind it?"

Thomas looked at her.

"The reason this war started."

The alarms became louder.

A countdown appeared.

00:05:00

Marcus stared.

"What happens in five minutes?"

Thomas answered quietly:

"Phase Three activates."

Evelyn looked at Lily.

"What does that mean?"

Thomas looked at her daughter.

"It means the world finds out what she is."

Evelyn's face hardened.

"No."

Thomas nodded.

"Exactly."

Then the lights returned.

A figure appeared at the end of the hallway.

Dr. Helena Voss.

Alive.

Calm.

Walking toward them.

No fear.

No guards.

No weapons.

Because she didn't need any.

She looked at Evelyn.

Then smiled.

"After all these years..."

"I finally get to meet my greatest achievement."

Evelyn raised her weapon.

"You don't own me."

Helena smiled.

"No."

A pause.

"But I know exactly what you'll do next."

Evelyn froze.

Because that was the one thing she hated hearing.

The one thing she couldn't accept.

Helena stepped closer.

"Because I wrote the first chapter of your life."

She looked at Lily.

May you like

"And now..."

"I'm here to write the ending."
