Chapter 5 – The Truth Beneath the Ashes

The explosion shook the entire mansion.

For a moment, Evelyn heard nothing.

No screaming.

No footsteps.

No alarms.

Only a high-pitched ringing in her ears.

Then instinct took over.

"Lily!"

She reached forward blindly.

Her hands found her daughter's small body.

Alive.

Shaking.

Evelyn pulled her close.

"I'm here."

"I'm here."

The darkness around them was thick with smoke.

Somewhere nearby, Marcus shouted orders.

"Move everyone to the east exit!"

"Check the second floor!"

"Find the attacker!"

Evelyn ignored everything except the child in her arms.

But then she felt it.

A small hand gripping her sleeve.

Not Lily's.

Another hand.

Grant's.

"Evelyn..."

She froze.

Slowly, she looked up.

Her husband was kneeling beside them.

His face was covered in dust.

A cut ran across his forehead.

But he was alive.

For a brief second...

She remembered the man she married.

The man who held her hand when Lily was born.

The man who promised he would protect their family.

Then she remembered the woman in his robe.

The bruises on Lily's hand.

The secrets.

The money.

The betrayal.

She pulled away.

"Don't touch me."

The pain in Grant's eyes was obvious.

But Evelyn no longer knew if it was real.

"You need to listen."

She stood.

"No."

"Evelyn, please."

"No."

Her voice was calm.

"Now you listen."

The smoke drifted between them.

"You had months to tell me the truth."

"You had months to protect Lily."

"You had months to stop this."

Grant lowered his head.

"I was scared."

Those words made her laugh softly.

A broken laugh.

"You were scared?"

She looked around the destroyed room.

"Do you know what scared feels like?"

Her eyes hardened.

"Being trapped in a foreign country with people hunting you."

"Wondering if your daughter will remember your face."

"Wondering if your husband is waiting for you..."

She paused.

"Or waiting for you to disappear."

Grant closed his eyes.

"I never wanted you dead."

Evelyn stared.

"But you wanted me gone."

Silence.

That silence was the answer.

Before Grant could respond, Marcus approached.

"We need to move."

Evelyn looked at him.

"What about the attacker?"

"Escaped."

Her expression changed.

"Escaped?"

Marcus nodded.

"He knew the layout."

Evelyn looked around.

The destroyed walls.

The disabled security system.

The hidden attack points.

Then she understood.

"He had help."

Marcus's face became serious.

"Yes."

Everyone looked toward Grant.

He immediately shook his head.

"No."

Evelyn didn't say anything.

She didn't need to.

The suspicion was already there.

Marcus spoke carefully.

"Grant."

"I didn't help him."

"Then explain something."

Marcus held up a small object.

A damaged electronic device.

"We found this hidden in your office."

Grant stared.

"What is it?"

"A communication relay."

Grant went pale.

"I've never seen that."

Marcus studied him.

"Someone used your house as a command center."

Evelyn looked toward the hallway.

The hallway where Lily had been punished.

The hallway where Vanessa had lived.

The hallway where strangers had apparently moved through her home without anyone knowing.

Her home.

Her daughter's safe place.

Had become a battlefield.

Then Lily spoke.

Quietly.

"Mommy..."

Evelyn immediately turned.

"What is it?"

Lily pointed toward the stairs.

"There was a man before."

Everyone froze.

"What man?"

Lily hugged herself.

"The night you didn't come home."

Evelyn felt her heart stop.

"What?"

Lily looked down.

"Daddy told me not to say anything."

Grant whispered:

"Lily..."

Evelyn turned sharply.

"Let her talk."

The little girl continued.

"He came to the house."

"Who came?"

"I don't know."

"What did he look like?"

Lily thought carefully.

"He had a scar."

"Where?"

She touched her cheek.

"Here."

Marcus exchanged a look with Evelyn.

Because they both knew.

The attacker tonight had no visible scar.

Which meant...

There was another person.

Another player.

Lily continued.

"He talked to Daddy."

"What did he say?"

The child hesitated.

Then whispered:

"He said..."

"He said the wife problem would be solved."

The room went silent.

Evelyn slowly looked at Grant.

"Wife problem."

Grant looked sick.

"I can explain."

"No."

She shook her head.

"You can't."

Because now she understood something.

The betrayal wasn't just about another woman.

It wasn't just about divorce papers.

Someone had been planning her disappearance long before she came home.

And Grant had been standing in the middle of it.

Maybe willingly.

Maybe not.

But he was there.

Suddenly Marcus's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then his face changed.

"What?"

Everyone waited.

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

"We found Vanessa."

Evelyn frowned.

"Where?"

"Outside the property."

"Is she alive?"

A pause.

"Yes."

"Then what's wrong?"

Marcus hesitated.

"She wasn't running."

"She was waiting."

Evelyn felt uneasy.

"Waiting for who?"

Marcus looked at his phone.

Then said:

"She had a message prepared."

"For you."

Evelyn stepped closer.

"What message?"

Marcus read it.

And every person in the room went silent.

"Evelyn Carter, if you want the truth about why your husband betrayed you, meet me alone."

A pause.

Then the second line appeared.

"Because Grant Carter is not the man you think he is."

Evelyn looked at her husband.

Grant looked terrified.

But not because of Vanessa.

Because of the message.

Because somewhere deep inside...

He knew Vanessa wasn't lying.

And Evelyn realized something even worse.

May you like

The enemy wasn't outside her family.

The enemy had been invited inside.
