Chapter 3 – The Man Who Knew Too Much

The room felt smaller.

Much smaller.

Evelyn had spent years walking into dangerous places.

War zones.

Underground facilities.

Rooms filled with people who wanted her dead.

But nothing had prepared her for the feeling of standing in her own home...

Looking at her husband...

And wondering if she had ever truly known him.

"Say that again."

Her voice was quiet.

Marcus Hayes looked at Grant.

Not Evelyn.

That alone told her everything.

"Six months ago, twenty-four hours before your mission went dark, Grant Carter contacted a private number connected to an individual we were investigating."

Grant immediately shook his head.

"No."

Marcus didn't blink.

"That's what the records show."

"That's impossible."

"You want to explain why your phone connected to a burner device registered under an offshore company?"

Grant's face changed.

Just slightly.

But Evelyn noticed.

"You knew."

Grant looked at her.

"Evelyn, listen to me."

"No."

She tightened her arms around Lily.

"Now you listen to me."

Her voice carried across the room.

"For six months, I believed I almost died because of the mission."

She stared at him.

"I believed I missed my daughter's first day of kindergarten because my job took me away."

A pause.

"I believed coming home would fix everything."

Her eyes moved to Vanessa.

"But I came home to another woman wearing my husband's robe."

Then back to Grant.

"And now I'm being told you may have had something to do with what happened to me."

Grant stepped forward.

"That is not true."

"Then tell me the truth."

He froze.

Because he didn't have one.

Not a good one.

Not one that would make sense.

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

Everyone turned toward her.

"You really don't know, do you?"

Evelyn looked at her.

"Know what?"

Vanessa leaned against the sofa.

"Grant never told you about the money."

Marcus immediately became alert.

"What money?"

Vanessa smiled.

"The money he received."

Grant's face went pale.

"Vanessa, stop."

"Why?"

She looked amused.

"She's already figured out you're a liar."

Evelyn felt Lily's small fingers tighten around her shirt.

She lowered her voice.

"Grant."

He looked at her.

"Is there something else?"

A long silence.

Then...

"Yes."

The word was barely audible.

Evelyn stared.

"How much?"

Grant swallowed.

"What?"

"How much money did you receive?"

He looked away.

That was enough.

Marcus stepped forward.

"Grant."

His tone was colder now.

"Answer."

Grant ran a hand through his hair.

"Three hundred thousand dollars."

Evelyn didn't react.

Not immediately.

Three hundred thousand.

A number.

A fact.

But behind that number were months of deception.

"From who?"

Grant didn't answer.

Marcus did.

"A company called Blackridge Holdings."

Evelyn's expression changed.

She knew that name.

Everyone in her field knew that name.

Blackridge Holdings wasn't a normal company.

It was a network.

A collection of shell corporations used to move money, information, and influence around the world.

The same network her team had been tracking.

The same network connected to the mission she almost didn't survive.

Evelyn slowly turned toward Grant.

"You were involved with them."

"No."

His answer came too quickly.

A mistake.

"I didn't know who they were."

"You accepted their money."

"They approached me."

"Why?"

Grant opened his mouth.

Closed it.

Vanessa looked away.

And Evelyn noticed.

"You knew."

Vanessa looked back.

"What?"

"You knew about Blackridge."

A flash of fear crossed her face.

Only a second.

But enough.

Marcus noticed too.

"Interesting."

Vanessa immediately became defensive.

"I don't know anything about your government investigation."

"No?"

Marcus pulled out his phone.

"Because we found your name connected to three Blackridge accounts."

Vanessa's face lost color.

Grant looked at her.

"What?"

She said nothing.

"You told me you were a marketing consultant."

Vanessa stayed silent.

Grant's expression changed.

"You lied to me?"

Evelyn almost laughed.

Almost.

The irony was almost too much.

The man who betrayed his wife was discovering betrayal himself.

But she felt no satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

Because Lily was still shaking.

And that was the only thing that mattered.

Evelyn looked down.

"Sweetheart."

Lily looked up.

"Did Vanessa hurt you before?"

The little girl froze.

A child shouldn't have to think before answering that question.

Slowly...

She nodded.

Evelyn's heart broke.

"How many times?"

Lily whispered:

"I don't know."

Marcus looked away.

Even he couldn't hide his anger.

Evelyn closed her eyes for one second.

Then opened them.

The sadness was gone.

The mother remained.

But the agent returned.

"Marcus."

"Yes?"

"I want every record."

"Already working on it."

"Every financial connection."

"Done."

"Every communication between Grant, Vanessa, and Blackridge."

Marcus nodded.

"Understood."

Grant stepped forward.

"Evelyn, please."

She looked at him.

"What?"

"I love you."

The words hung in the air.

Then Evelyn asked:

"Did you love me when you let her hurt our daughter?"

Grant went silent.

"Did you love me when you replaced my photos?"

Silence.

"Did you love me when you decided I wasn't coming home?"

His eyes filled with regret.

But regret was not enough.

Not anymore.

Evelyn walked toward the door.

Marcus followed.

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

"Wait."

Evelyn stopped.

Vanessa's voice was different now.

No arrogance.

No confidence.

Only fear.

"You think you know everything."

Evelyn turned.

"What else is there?"

Vanessa looked at Grant.

Then back at Evelyn.

"Your mission wasn't supposed to fail."

The room froze.

Evelyn felt every muscle in her body tense.

"What did you say?"

Vanessa swallowed.

"I said..."

She looked nervous.

"Someone wanted you dead."

Marcus stepped forward.

"How do you know that?"

Vanessa didn't answer.

Because before she could...

A gunshot exploded outside.

The windows shattered.

Everyone dropped.

Marcus grabbed Evelyn and pulled Lily behind cover.

Another shot.

Then another.

The mansion fell into chaos.

Someone was shooting at them.

Evelyn held Lily close.

Her daughter was crying.

But Evelyn's eyes were locked on one person.

Grant.

Because as everyone rushed for safety...

Grant wasn't looking at the shooter.

He wasn't looking at Vanessa.

He was looking at Evelyn.

Like he already knew exactly who was coming.

And that terrified her more than the bullets.

Because the biggest question was no longer:

Who wanted Evelyn Carter dead?

May you like

The question was:

How long had her husband known?
