Chapter 14 – The Daughter Who Carried Her Mother’s Shadow

The recording ended.

But Lily's voice remained.

"Please don't let them make me like you."

Evelyn stood completely still.

Those words hurt more than any bullet ever could.

Because bullets attacked the body.

But those words attacked the one thing she had left.

Her belief that she could protect her daughter.

Marcus watched her carefully.

"Evelyn."

She didn't respond.

"Say something."

Finally, she whispered:

"What did he mean?"

Nobody answered.

Because everyone was thinking the same thing.

What was Evelyn?

And what did Lily inherit?

The team spent the next several hours analyzing every file they could find.

The Carter estate was no longer a home.

It was an archive.

A graveyard of secrets.

Marcus stood beside the main screen.

"We found something."

Evelyn walked over.

"What?"

A file appeared.

CARTER PROJECT – SUBJECT LINEAGE

She saw names.

Generations.

Family records.

Then one name appeared.

Her mother's.

Then her father's.

Then hers.

But below hers...

A new entry.

LILY CARTER.

Evelyn's breathing slowed.

"No."

Marcus looked at her.

"The project wasn't started with you."

"Then who?"

He scrolled upward.

The first name appeared.

Elias Carter – 1948

"The project began with your ancestors."

Evelyn stared.

"Why?"

Marcus opened another file.

A report.

Cognitive Prediction Ability.

Enhanced Threat Recognition.

Extreme Adaptive Response.

The words felt unreal.

"You're saying my family has been studied for generations?"

Marcus nodded.

"Yes."

"By who?"

Nobody knew.

Until Margaret spoke.

"The Order."

Everyone turned.

Her mother looked exhausted.

"The Order found our family decades ago."

"Why?"

Margaret looked at Evelyn.

"Because they believed certain people were born with abilities that could change the world."

Evelyn shook her head.

"Abilities?"

"I don't mean supernatural."

Her mother quickly explained.

"They believed the human brain could evolve."

"Faster learning."

"Better prediction."

"Stronger survival instincts."

A pause.

"They wanted to create the perfect strategist."

Evelyn looked at the files.

"And they chose me."

Margaret's eyes filled with sadness.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because you were the first one who exceeded their expectations."

The room went silent.

Evelyn hated that sentence.

Not because it was impossible.

Because a part of her believed it.

Her entire career had been built around things people called impossible.

She could predict enemy movements before they happened.

She could read people faster than they could lie.

She thought it was training.

Maybe it wasn't.

Then Marcus received a message.

He looked at his phone.

His expression changed.

"What?"

Evelyn asked.

"We found Lily."

Everyone froze.

"Where?"

Marcus turned the screen.

A location.

An abandoned research facility.

Evelyn immediately grabbed her jacket.

"I'm going."

Marcus stopped her.

"Not alone."

"I didn't say alone."

"You know what Thomas wants."

Evelyn looked at him.

"He wants me to come."

"Exactly."

"Then I'll go."

Marcus shook his head.

"That's what he expects."

Evelyn stepped closer.

"My daughter is there."

"I know."

"No."

Her voice became sharp.

"You don't."

Everyone went quiet.

"You don't know what it feels like to hear your child apologize for being hurt."

"You don't know what it feels like to realize someone taught your daughter fear while you were trying to save strangers."

A pause.

"So don't tell me to wait."

Marcus didn't argue.

Because he understood.

The abandoned facility sat beneath an old military base.

Officially closed twenty years ago.

Unofficially...

It had never stopped operating.

Evelyn, Marcus, and a small team entered through the underground entrance.

No guards.

No alarms.

Too easy.

Evelyn noticed.

"They want us here."

Marcus nodded.

"Yes."

"Then why let us walk in?"

"Because this isn't an attack."

Evelyn looked ahead.

"It's a test."

The doors opened.

Inside was a large room.

White walls.

Glass chambers.

Children's drawings.

Evelyn stopped.

Her heart sank.

On the wall were pictures.

Hundreds.

Children.

All connected to the project.

Then she saw one.

A photo of herself.

Age five.

Standing beside Thomas.

Below it:

SUBJECT SUCCESSFUL.

Her hands tightened.

Then another picture.

Lily.

Taken recently.

Below it:

NEXT GENERATION.

A voice echoed through the room.

"You finally understand."

Evelyn turned.

Thomas stood behind the glass.

Lily was beside him.

Alive.

Safe.

But wearing a small device around her wrist.

Evelyn's blood ran cold.

"Lily!"

Her daughter ran toward the glass.

"Mommy!"

Thomas stopped her.

Not roughly.

Just enough.

Evelyn's eyes darkened.

"Let her go."

Thomas looked at her.

"You see?"

"See what?"

"Exactly what I created."

Evelyn stared.

"She loves you."

"No."

Thomas shook his head.

"She fears losing you."

A pause.

"Just like you feared losing your mother."

Evelyn felt anger rising.

"You don't know anything about love."

Thomas smiled sadly.

"That's where you're wrong."

He looked at Lily.

"I loved you."

The words disgusted her.

"You experimented on me."

"To protect you."

"You lied."

"To save you."

"You destroyed my life."

"To prepare you."

Evelyn stepped closer.

"For what?"

Thomas looked toward the ceiling.

Then said:

"For the war that is coming."

Silence.

"What war?"

Thomas looked at her.

"The war between people who want to control human evolution..."

"And people like you who were born to stop them."

Evelyn froze.

"People like me?"

Thomas nodded.

"You're not the experiment."

A pause.

"You're the result."

Then the alarms started.

Red lights flashed.

Marcus looked around.

"What's happening?"

Thomas smiled.

"Something I couldn't stop."

"What?"

His expression changed.

For the first time...

He looked afraid.

"The Order is here."

A second later...

Every screen in the facility turned on.

A woman appeared.

An unfamiliar woman.

But Evelyn recognized the symbol behind her.

The same symbol from the file.

The same symbol from her childhood.

The woman smiled.

"Hello, Evelyn Carter."

A pause.

"We've waited a long time to meet you."

Evelyn raised her weapon.

"Who are you?"

The woman smiled.

"The person who created your father."

The room went silent.

"And the person who created you."

The screen went black.

May you like

Then the final message appeared:

PHASE THREE HAS BEGUN.
