Chapter 17 – The Choice Evelyn Made Before She Forgot

The countdown continued.
00:00:30
Every second felt louder than the explosions outside.
Evelyn stood between three people who had shaped her entire life.
Her father.
The woman who trained her.
The mother who disappeared.
All of them claimed they were protecting her.
All of them had lied.
And now they wanted her to make a choice.
But Evelyn had learned something during years of dangerous missions.
When everyone wanted you to choose a side...
It usually meant they were all hiding something.
She looked at Helena.
"You said you removed my memories."
Helena nodded.
"Yes."
"Then tell me what I chose before you did."
For the first time...
Helena hesitated.
Only for a moment.
But Evelyn saw it.
A weakness.
A crack.
"What?"
Helena looked away.
"You weren't supposed to remember."
Evelyn stepped closer.
"That wasn't my question."
The timer continued.
00:00:20
Marcus checked his weapon.
"Evelyn."
She ignored him.
"Tell me."
Helena remained silent.
Then Thomas spoke.
"She chose to destroy the project."
Everyone looked at him.
Helena's expression hardened.
"You don't get to tell that story."
"But it's the truth."
Thomas looked at Evelyn.
"At seventeen, you found the files."
A pause.
"You discovered what we had done."
Evelyn felt a sudden pressure in her head.
A memory.
A hallway.
A younger version of herself.
A locked room.
"I remember..."
Everyone turned.
Evelyn held her temple.
"I remember the basement."
Margaret gasped.
"No."
"Mom?"
Her mother's face changed.
Because she knew.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
And suddenly...
The memories came back.
She was seventeen.
Standing inside the hidden basement beneath the Carter estate.
The same room.
The same files.
But everything was younger.
Everything was before the lies became obvious.
Young Evelyn opened a folder.
Inside were photographs.
Her childhood.
Her tests.
Her evaluations.
Then one document.
PROJECT SUCCESSOR: EVELYN CARTER
Her hands shook.
Her father entered.
"Evelyn."
She turned.
"How long?"
Thomas looked at her.
"What?"
"How long have you been studying me?"
Silence.
That was the answer.
She cried.
Not because of the experiment.
Because she finally understood.
Her childhood memories weren't memories.
They were data.
Thomas stepped closer.
"I was trying to prepare you."
"No."
Young Evelyn shook her head.
"You were building me."
A pause.
"I am not your project."
Thomas looked broken.
"You don't understand what you are."
She looked at the files.
"I understand perfectly."
Then another person entered.
Helena.
Young Evelyn stared.
"Who are you?"
Helena answered:
"The person who can help you."
But Evelyn noticed something.
Helena wasn't surprised.
She already knew she would find the files.
Because she had been waiting.
"You planned this."
Helena said nothing.
Young Evelyn looked at both of them.
Then made a decision.
A decision that changed everything.
"If I can't trust my own family..."
A pause.
"I can't let anyone control this."
She reached for the emergency system.
Thomas shouted:
"Evelyn, don't!"
She activated it.
The entire project was scheduled for destruction.
Helena grabbed her arm.
"You have no idea what you're doing."
Young Evelyn looked at her.
"Yes, I do."
"I am ending this."
The memory disappeared.
Evelyn opened her eyes.
Everyone was watching her.
She whispered:
"I didn't choose any of you."
A silence followed.
Helena frowned.
"What?"
"I didn't choose my father."
She looked at Thomas.
"I didn't choose the Order."
Then at Helena.
"I didn't choose you."
Her voice became stronger.
"I chose myself."
The countdown reached:
00:00:10
The steel door behind Helena began unlocking.
She looked nervous.
"Evelyn."
For the first time, Helena sounded afraid.
"You don't understand."
"No."
Evelyn raised her weapon.
"You don't understand."
The door opened halfway.
A bright light appeared behind it.
Marcus looked inside.
His expression changed.
"What is that?"
Nobody answered.
Because inside the chamber...
Were hundreds of files.
But not just files.
Videos.
Recordings.
Research.
All about Evelyn.
And one final file displayed on the main screen:
CARTER PROJECT – FINAL SUBJECT
Everyone expected Evelyn's name.
But it wasn't.
The name on the screen was:
LILY CARTER
Evelyn froze.
"No..."
Helena stepped forward.
"Now you understand."
Evelyn turned.
"What did you do?"
Helena looked at Lily.
"We didn't create her."
A pause.
"We discovered she was already different."
Evelyn's grip tightened.
"She's five years old."
"Exactly."
"She is a child."
"She's also the first natural successor."
The room went silent.
Marcus looked at Helena.
"Successor to what?"
Helena stared at Evelyn.
"To you."
Evelyn shook her head.
"No."
Helena smiled.
"You still don't see it."
"What?"
"Your abilities were created through years of conditioning."
A pause.
"Lily was born with them."
Evelyn looked at her daughter.
Her little girl.
The child who drew pictures.
The child who loved bedtime stories.
The child who was afraid of thunderstorms.
Not a project.
Not a weapon.
Her daughter.
Then the facility alarms changed.
Not red.
Not emergency.
Something worse.
A message appeared:
EXTERNAL OVERRIDE ACCEPTED
Everyone froze.
Marcus checked his device.
"Someone else accessed the system."
Helena looked confused.
"Impossible."
Thomas turned pale.
"No."
Evelyn noticed.
"Who?"
Thomas stared at the screen.
Then whispered:
"The person who has been controlling all of us."
The screen changed.
A video began playing.
A man appeared.
Older.
Calm.
Someone nobody expected.
Someone who should have been dead.
Evelyn's face went blank.
Because she knew him.
The man looked into the camera.
And said:
"Hello, Evelyn."
A pause.
"I think it's time you met your real father."
The screen went dark.
May you like
And for the first time...
Thomas Carter looked terrified of someone else.
