Chapter 10 – The House That Never Burned

The old Carter family estate sat fifty miles outside the city.
Abandoned.
Forgotten.
At least, that was what Evelyn had been told.
For twelve years, she believed the house had been destroyed after her mother's death.
She remembered the fire.
The smoke.
The flashing lights.
The investigators telling her there was nothing left.
Just ashes.
Just memories.
But now...
A video showed Victoria Hale standing inside that same house.
Alive.
Waiting.
Evelyn sat in the passenger seat of the armored vehicle, staring through the rain-covered window.
Her hands were still.
Too still.
Marcus noticed.
"You haven't said a word for twenty minutes."
"I'm thinking."
"About?"
She looked at him.
"About how many people lied to me."
Marcus didn't answer.
Because he knew.
The list was getting longer.
Grant.
Victoria.
Her own agency.
Maybe even her mother.
Behind them, another vehicle carried Grant, Vanessa, and Lily under protection.
Evelyn had wanted to leave Grant behind.
But Marcus insisted.
"He's a witness."
Not a husband.
Not anymore.
A witness.
That word hurt more than she expected.
The vehicle slowed.
The old iron gates appeared through the fog.
Evelyn stared.
The Carter family estate.
Exactly as she remembered.
Except one thing.
It wasn't burned.
The windows were intact.
The walls stood strong.
The garden was even maintained.
Someone had been living here.
Recently.
Marcus looked at the security readings.
"Someone has power running."
Evelyn nodded.
"I know."
"How?"
She stared at the house.
"Because my mother hated darkness."
A small memory appeared.
Her mother lighting candles during storms.
Saying that a home should always feel alive.
Evelyn swallowed.
A memory she thought was gone.
A memory that suddenly felt like a clue.
The team approached carefully.
Weapons ready.
Marcus raised his hand.
Everyone stopped.
"Movement."
A figure appeared behind the upstairs window.
A woman.
Watching them.
Evelyn's breath stopped.
For a second...
She was seventeen again.
A daughter waiting for her mother to come home.
"Mom?"
The figure disappeared.
Marcus grabbed her arm.
"Wait."
But Evelyn was already moving.
"Evelyn."
She stopped.
Marcus looked serious.
"Don't let what you want to be true get you killed."
She knew he was right.
But she also knew something else.
If that was her mother...
She couldn't walk away.
The front door opened by itself.
No one touched it.
A voice came from inside.
"Evelyn."
Her entire body froze.
That voice.
Older.
Softer.
But unmistakable.
Her mother's voice.
Marcus looked at her.
"You heard that?"
She nodded.
Then whispered:
"Yes."
The team entered.
The house was warm.
Not abandoned.
Not empty.
Family photos lined the walls.
But something was wrong.
Every photo had been changed.
Evelyn's childhood pictures.
Her mother's pictures.
Her father's pictures.
Someone had added new images.
Pictures taken recently.
Pictures of Evelyn.
Her wedding.
Her mission.
Her daughter.
Her entire life.
Marcus stared.
"Someone has been watching you for years."
Evelyn touched one photograph.
A picture of her leaving for her first federal assignment.
Behind it was a handwritten note.
She pulled it out.
Only four words.
I WAS ALWAYS WATCHING.
Her fingers tightened.
Then a sound came from upstairs.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Careful.
Everyone raised their weapons.
A woman appeared at the top of the stairs.
Older.
Gray hair.
But the same eyes.
The same eyes Evelyn saw every morning in the mirror.
Evelyn couldn't breathe.
"Mom?"
The woman looked down.
Tears filled her eyes.
"Evelyn."
The gun in Evelyn's hand lowered slightly.
Not because she trusted her.
Because her mind couldn't understand what she was seeing.
"My mother is dead."
The woman nodded sadly.
"I know."
"Then who are you?"
A painful silence.
Then the woman whispered:
"The person who had to let you believe that."
Evelyn stared.
"What?"
Her mother walked down slowly.
"I couldn't protect you if you knew I was alive."
"Protect me from what?"
Her mother looked around the house.
"From them."
"Blackridge?"
The woman's face changed.
"Blackridge is only a name."
A pause.
"The real enemy is much older."
Marcus stepped forward.
"Who are you?"
The woman looked at him.
Then back at Evelyn.
"I am the reason your daughter was targeted."
Evelyn immediately raised the weapon again.
"What did you say?"
Her mother's expression broke.
"I never wanted Lily involved."
"Then why was she?"
"Because they found out."
"Found out what?"
Her mother looked directly at her.
"That the Carter bloodline carries something they need."
Nobody spoke.
Evelyn felt anger replacing shock.
"I am not a project."
"No."
Her mother shook her head.
"You are a key."
"A key to what?"
Before her mother could answer...
The lights suddenly went out.
The same darkness.
The same pattern.
Marcus cursed.
"Again?"
A sound came from outside.
Vehicles.
Multiple vehicles.
Someone had followed them.
Evelyn moved toward the window.
Three black SUVs surrounded the estate.
Too many people.
Too organized.
Her mother whispered:
"They found us."
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
"Who?"
Her mother answered.
A name Evelyn had never heard before.
"The Order."
A cold feeling moved through the room.
"The people who created Blackridge."
A gunshot shattered the window.
Everyone dropped.
Chaos erupted.
Evelyn grabbed her mother and pulled her behind cover.
For the first time in twelve years...
She was protecting the woman she thought she lost.
Then her mother grabbed her arm.
"Evelyn."
"What?"
"There is one thing you need to know."
Another explosion shook the house.
Her mother looked terrified.
Not for herself.
For Evelyn.
"Your father didn't die either."
Everything stopped.
Evelyn stared.
"What?"
Her mother whispered:
"He has been alive this entire time."
A pause.
"And he is the person leading the people outside."
The shooting continued.
And Evelyn realized...
May you like
Her entire family had been a battlefield.
She just never knew she was standing in the middle of it.
