Chapter 9 - CLAIRE’S SEALED LETTER
Claire Vance had prepared a sealed legal box before her death.
The instructions required Elena to open it if she ever married into the Carrington family.
Marcus had opened it alone after the engagement.
He had never shown Elena.
Now he placed the box on her hospital table.
“I should have given you this years ago.”
Elena looked at him.
“Yes.”
Inside was Claire’s wedding ring.
A handwritten letter rested beneath it.
My beautiful Elena,
The Carrington name appeared in a guardianship case my firm reviewed.
A young woman was declared unstable after refusing to transfer family property to her husband.
The doctors, judge, and private clinic were all connected to Beatrice Carrington.

Elena stopped reading.
Marcus turned toward the window.
Claire had understood both families perfectly.
The letter continued.
Richard may love you.

A digital drive contained Claire’s research.
She had collected guardianship cases linked to Carrington doctors.
She had interviewed Caroline West before cancer made travel impossible.
She knew Richard had abandoned Caroline inside the clinic.
Claire had tried to warn Marcus.
He had mistaken caution for grief.
Elena placed the ring against her palm.
“You hid Mom’s voice from me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I thought I could build a case without forcing you to choose between me and Richard.”
“You were afraid I would choose him.”
“Yes.”
“I might have.”
“I know.”
Elena closed the box.
“Then I would have been responsible for that choice.”
Marcus nodded.
“I understand now.”
“No.”
“You understand the words.”
“Living with the consequence will take longer.”
Marcus accepted that too.
Naomi entered with another recovered file.
Beatrice had prepared three possible outcomes for the baby.
If Elena signed, Richard would manage the trust.
If Elena was committed, Beatrice would become temporary guardian.
If Elena lost the baby, the family would blame Marcus’s interference and use public sympathy to secure a blocked banking merger.
Elena stared at the final document.
“They had a plan for my child’s death.”
Marcus’s face became empty.
Naomi continued.
“The document is titled Sympathy Consolidation.”
