Chapter 10 - THE HUSBAND BEHIND THE GLASS

Richard agreed to meet Elena inside a protected interview room.
A wall of reinforced glass separated them.
He looked tired.
His expensive suit was wrinkled.
The gold tie clip was gone.
“I did not order Adrian to take you from the hospital,” he said.
“You gave him my security information.”
“My mother said he would monitor you.”
“You signed the clinic papers.”
“She said they were temporary.”
“You took my keys.”
“You were upset.”
“You watched Victoria slap me.”
Richard looked down.
“I was trying to keep control.”
“That is the problem.”
Elena placed the postnuptial agreement against the glass.
“You knew what these pages did.”
“Yes.”
“You knew the baby controlled the trust.”
“Yes.”
“You planned to tell me after I signed?”
“I planned to remove Mother once the child was born.”
“How?”
“With voting control.”
“You needed me frightened enough to give it to you.”
Richard pressed both hands against the table.
“I wanted us free.”
“You helped them imprison me to create freedom later.”
“I thought I could repair everything.”
“When?”
“After the trust transferred.”
“After the birth.”
“After your mother lost power.”
“You kept hurting me in the present for a future where you finally became brave.”
Richard closed his eyes.
Elena looked at the man she had loved.
She believed he had loved her too.
That made his betrayal more painful, not less.
“Caroline said you tried to help her escape.”
Richard looked up sharply.
“She is alive?”
“Yes.”
His face collapsed with relief and shame.
“I thought Mother found her.”
“You stopped helping because Beatrice threatened your inheritance.”
“I was twenty-six.”
“You were old enough to know a locked clinic was wrong.”
“Yes.”
Richard began crying.
It was the first time Elena had seen him cry.
She felt sorrow.
She did not confuse sorrow with safety.
“Will you testify against your mother?” she asked.
Richard hesitated.
The hesitation answered first.
“If I testify, the trust collapses.”
Elena stood.
“I did not ask about the trust.”
She reached the door.
Richard spoke behind her.
“There is a private archive beneath the estate chapel.”
Elena stopped.
“My mother keeps the original bank ledgers there.”
“Why tell me now?”
Richard looked through the glass.
“Because helping you should finally cost me something.”
May you like
It was not enough to save the marriage.
It was enough to open the next door.
