Chapter 5 - THE POSTNUPTIAL AGREEMENT

Elena remembered the agreement Richard had placed before her two weeks earlier.

He called it a standard estate-planning document.

He said every Carrington spouse signed one before the birth of an heir.

The document contained seventy-four pages.

Claire had taught Elena never to sign dense contracts without reading them.

Elena asked for an independent attorney.

Richard became offended.

“You are treating our marriage like a business negotiation.”

Elena refused to sign.

That was when his behavior changed.

He removed her access to one household account.

He replaced her driver.

He told the estate physician that pregnancy had made her suspicious.

He began sleeping in another bedroom.

Elena had believed he was stressed.

Now Naomi placed the agreement on the hospital table.

Page forty-three transferred Elena’s medical authority to Richard if two Carrington-selected doctors declared her emotionally impaired.

Page fifty-eight waived her right to challenge the baby’s trust guardian.

Page seventy-two required disputes to be heard by a private arbitration panel chosen by Beatrice.

Every panel member had financial ties to the Carrington banks.

“They would have controlled the doctors, the guardian, and the court,” Elena said.

Naomi nodded.

“You could have challenged it eventually.”

“But you might have lost years.”

Marcus read the final page.

The signature block had been notarized in advance.

Elena’s signature line remained blank.

Richard’s was complete.

“He planned for me to sign after the party,” Elena said.

Sophie looked at her.

“Victoria told the staff to leave the library prepared.”

“There was a pen, a witness, and a doctor waiting.”

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“I thought the shower was supposed to welcome my baby.”

“It was supposed to break you,” Marcus said.

She looked at him sharply.

He immediately regretted the bluntness.

Then Elena nodded.

“No.”

“You’re right.”

“They wanted me frightened enough to sign anything.”

Naomi received a report from the estate search.

Agents had recovered a detailed schedule from Victoria’s bedroom.

1:30 PM - isolate Elena.

1:40 PM - provoke argument near fountain.

1:45 PM - visible incident.

1:50 PM - remove phone and keys.

2:00 PM - Dr. Vale arrives.

2:15 PM - signatures.

The plan had been timed almost to the minute.

Marcus’s accidental open call disrupted it.

Elena looked at Sophie.

“You saved me.”

Sophie shook her head.

“I opened a phone line.”

“You kept it open while they dragged you away.”

“That was enough.”

A federal analyst entered with a laptop.

“We recovered part of the deleted estate server.”

“There is a video from the garden.”

The footage showed Victoria approaching Elena near the fountain.

She whispered something.

Elena stepped backward.

Victoria shoved both hands against her shoulders.

Elena struck the stone border and fell.

Richard entered the frame.

He did not help her.

He took the car keys from her hand.

The audio captured his words.

“You will sign tonight.”

“Or everyone here will testify that you attacked Victoria.”

Elena closed her eyes.

May you like

Richard had not merely failed her.

He had participated.
