Chapter 8 - BEATRICE CARRINGTON

Beatrice Carrington entered federal court wearing navy silk and a pearl brooch.

She was seventy-three years old.

Her name appeared on hospitals, libraries, university buildings, and charitable foundations.

Reporters described her as American aristocracy.

She described herself as a concerned grandmother.

“My daughter-in-law is suffering from pregnancy-related instability,” she said outside the courthouse.

“Her father is a former military operative with unresolved trauma.”

“He has exploited her condition to attack a respected family.”

Inside, Naomi played the garage footage.

The medical van contained forged commitment papers.

Beatrice’s signature appeared on the neonatal transfer order.

Her attorney called the documents precautionary.

Elena entered the interview room.

Beatrice smiled warmly.

“My darling.”

Elena remained standing.

“You sent Adrian to take me.”

“I sent trusted professionals to protect you.”

“He held a needle against my neck.”

“He knew you might resist care.”

“You created false medical reports.”

“Your behavior at the shower concerned everyone.”

“Victoria pushed me.”

“You lost your balance.”

“She slapped me.”

“You provoked her.”

Elena placed both hands on the table.

“My baby does not belong to you.”

Beatrice’s expression cooled.

“The child carries Carrington blood.”

“The child carries my blood.”

“And Richard’s.”

“Not yours.”

Beatrice leaned closer.

“You are carrying the first heir in a generation.”

“You have responsibilities beyond your feelings.”

Elena looked at the microphone between them.

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“For saying exactly what you believe while federal investigators are recording.”

Beatrice’s attorney ended the interview.

Outside the room, Naomi received a decrypted archive file.

It showed payments from Beatrice to Adrian Shaw beginning eleven years earlier.

The dates matched the deaths of three Operation Lantern witnesses.

Sophie’s father.

A State Department investigator named Thomas Hale.

A financial auditor named Miriam Clarke.

Marcus recognized Thomas’s photograph.

He was Claire’s older brother.

Claire had always believed Thomas died during humanitarian work in Europe.

The truth was that he had discovered Carrington bank accounts connected to stolen disaster-relief funds.

He contacted Marcus’s unit under his mother’s surname.

Adrian sold his identity before Marcus realized Thomas was part of Claire’s family.

Marcus stared at the file.

“My wife’s brother died because of my operation.”

Naomi shook her head.

“He died because Adrian betrayed him and Beatrice ordered it.”

“I built the system Adrian entered.”

“You also spent years trying to expose the people who corrupted it.”

Marcus looked through the glass at Elena.

“I brought this into my family.”

Naomi’s voice softened.

“The Carringtons chose your family before Elena ever met Richard.”

“The blame belongs where the decisions were made.”

May you like

Marcus wanted to believe her.

He was not ready.
