Chapter 6 - THE MAN BEHIND THE POLISHED SMILE

Richard requested permission to visit the hospital.

Elena refused.

He sent flowers.

She ordered security to remove them.

He sent a handwritten letter through his attorney.

Elena opened it only because Naomi needed to preserve evidence.

My love,

The situation became chaotic.

Victoria acted without my permission.

I took your keys because you were distressed and in no condition to drive.

Your father has always hated my family.

He is using your fear to destroy our future.

Elena stopped reading.

“He still calls taking my keys protection.”

Marcus sat across from her.

“Control survives by changing the names of things.”

“Confinement becomes care.”

“Threats become concern.”

“Silence becomes loyalty.”

Elena looked at him.

“You know because you did it too.”

Marcus did not look away.

“Yes.”

She returned to the letter.

Richard claimed the trust agreement would protect their child.

He said Marcus wanted access to Carrington money.

The accusation was almost absurd.

Marcus lived in a modest house.

He drove a twelve-year-old SUV.

He spent his weekends building furniture.

Richard had mistaken simplicity for failure because he could not imagine a powerful man choosing not to display power.

Elena finished the letter.

At the bottom, Richard had written,

Come home before your father turns this into a war.

Elena folded the paper.

“He still thinks the war began when Dad arrived.”

Naomi entered.

“We found evidence that Richard authorized the clinic transport.”

Elena’s hands became cold.

The transport order carried his digital signature.

It instructed the clinic to use restraints if Elena resisted.

Richard’s attorney claimed Beatrice applied the signature through a family authorization system.

The digital log showed Richard approving it with facial recognition.

“He looked into the camera and approved it,” Elena whispered.

Marcus stood.

“Where is he?”

Naomi blocked his path.

“At the estate under controlled detention.”

“You cannot speak to him.”

“I was not planning to speak.”

Elena looked toward her father.

“Sit down.”

Marcus stopped.

She had never used that tone with him.

He returned to the chair.

“I will decide what happens to Richard,” she said.

“Yes.”

“You will not threaten him.”

“No.”

“You will not use your old unit to frighten him into confessing.”

“No.”

Elena studied his face.

“Do you mean that?”

Marcus took a slow breath.

“I want to break every bone in his body.”

“I will not.”

“The law gets him.”

“The evidence gets him.”

“You get to choose what he becomes in your life.”

Elena’s shoulders lowered slightly.

That was the difference she needed.

May you like

Marcus had power.

He was finally allowing her to set its limits.
