Chapter 16 - THE VERDICTS
Beatrice Carrington was convicted of murder, kidnapping conspiracy, medical imprisonment, witness intimidation, corruption, and financial crimes.
Adrian Shaw was convicted of selling protected identities, attempted kidnapping, obstruction, and conspiracy.
Grant Mercer pleaded guilty to unlawful detention and assisting the hospital abduction.
Victoria was convicted of assault, conspiracy, and witness intimidation.
Her cooperation reduced her sentence.
It did not erase it.
Richard pleaded guilty to fraud, unlawful restraint, conspiracy, and obstruction.
His testimony earned him a shorter sentence than Beatrice.
He would still spend years in federal prison.
During sentencing, Richard asked permission to address Elena.
The judge allowed one brief statement.
“I loved you,” Richard said.
Elena believed him.
“I treated love as a promise that you would remain after every betrayal.”
“I believed I could choose my mother, my inheritance, and my comfort first.”
“Then choose you later.”
“I understand now that later becomes never when someone is being harmed.”
Elena’s eyes filled with tears.
She did not answer.
Richard looked toward her stomach.
“I surrender every financial claim connected to our child.”
“I will accept whatever custody restrictions the court imposes.”
“I will not allow the Carrington trust to remain a reason for my family to hunt her.”
Beatrice laughed from the defense table.
“You are throwing away a billion dollars.”
Richard looked at his mother.
“I am removing your price from my daughter’s head.”
The criminal portion of the Carrington trust was seized.
Legitimate businesses entered independent management.
Employees received protected pension shares.
Money from corrupt accounts funded restitution for clinic victims and families of murdered witnesses.
The unborn child would receive only a modest, supervised inheritance from clean assets.
She would not control the empire.
Elena felt relief.
