Chapter 14 - THE HEARING THAT BROKE THE DYNASTY
The federal hearing lasted five weeks.
Former employees filled the courtroom.
Women from the Carrington clinic sat together near the front.
Caroline West testified first.
She described the restraints.
The medication.
The reports calling her delusional whenever she told the truth.
“Did Richard help you?” the prosecutor asked.
“For three days.”
“Then his mother threatened his inheritance.”
“He stopped answering.”
Caroline looked toward Richard.
“He always wanted to be good after it became safe.”
Sophie testified about the cellar cage.
She identified her father’s files.
She described pressing Elena’s phone contact while Grant dragged her away.
Dr. Maya Chen testified about Elena’s injuries.
The garden video played.
Victoria’s push.
Richard taking the keys.
The slap in the foyer.
Elena took the stand wearing a dark blue maternity dress.
She placed one hand over her stomach.
The prosecutor asked why she had not left the marriage sooner.
Elena answered honestly.
“Richard apologized after every cruel moment.”
“He said his mother pressured him.”
“He promised things would change after the wedding.”
“Then after the pregnancy.”
“Then after the trust transferred.”
“I kept waiting for the version of him that appeared when no choice was required.”
Beatrice’s attorney approached.
“Your father concealed a classified career from you.”
“Yes.”
“He investigated your husband secretly.”
“Yes.”
“He deployed armed federal units against your family.”
“He activated a lawful operation after I was assaulted and confined.”
“Do you trust Marcus Vance?”
Elena looked toward her father.
“Not automatically.”
The courtroom shifted.
She continued.
“He lied by omission.”
“He denied me information because he feared my choice.”
“He has admitted that.”
“He does not demand that I surrender my judgment before he protects me.”
“That is the difference.”
Marcus testified later.
He acknowledged every failure of Operation Lantern.
He described Adrian’s betrayal.
He admitted hiding Claire’s letter.
He did not present himself as a hero.
He presented evidence.
Beatrice watched him with contempt.
“You are a soldier pretending to understand families,” she said.
Marcus looked toward her.
“You are a criminal who called control a family tradition.”
The judge ordered silence.
Then Richard informed his attorney that he intended to testify.
