Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN BENEATH THE MANSION

Sophie arrived at the hospital under federal protection.

Bruises circled both wrists.

A cut crossed her forehead.

She refused to speak until she saw Elena.

When she entered the room, Elena reached for her.

“I thought they took you away.”

“They tried.”

Sophie looked toward Marcus.

Her expression changed.

“You are Director Vance.”

Elena looked between them.

“How do you know him?”

Sophie lowered herself into a chair.

“My father knew him.”

Her father had been Daniel Lane, a compliance officer at Carrington National Bank.

Eleven years earlier, Daniel discovered private accounts used to pay judges, doctors, and government contractors.

He agreed to testify for Marcus’s task force.

Three days before the hearing, his vehicle exploded on a rural highway.

The death was ruled an accident.

Sophie’s mother changed their names and moved repeatedly.

“Why did you work inside the Carrington estate?” Marcus asked.

“To find what my father hid.”

“Did you find it?”

“Part of it.”

Sophie explained that the family officially dismissed her three months earlier.

Elena secretly kept paying her because Beatrice Carrington had ordered every employee loyal to Elena removed.

Sophie used the arrangement to continue searching the mansion.

Two days before the baby shower, she found a hidden room beneath the wine cellar.

Inside were surveillance files.

Medical reports.

Copies of private messages.

One file contained photographs of Marcus.

Another documented Elena’s pregnancy from the first doctor’s appointment.

“They knew who you were,” Sophie told Marcus.

“Beatrice knew before Elena married Richard.”

Elena’s face drained of color.

“Did Richard know?”

Sophie looked down.

“His signature approved the surveillance budget.”

Elena pressed one hand against her stomach.

Naomi placed a folder on the table.

It contained a psychiatric evaluation of Elena.

The doctor claimed she suffered from pregnancy-related paranoia, violent mood changes, and delusions about the Carrington family.

Elena had never met the doctor.

Another document requested emergency medical guardianship.

A third instructed a private clinic to admit her immediately after the baby shower.

“They were going to lock me away,” Elena whispered.

Sophie nodded.

“Once you were declared unstable, Richard would control your medical decisions.”

“After the baby was born, Beatrice would control the child’s trust.”

Marcus looked at the file.

“What trust?”

Elena shook her head.

“Richard said the baby would receive a small family inheritance.”

Sophie gave a humorless laugh.

“The first Carrington great-grandchild born inside a recognized marriage receives controlling voting rights over the family trust.”

“The trust is worth more than one billion dollars.”

Elena stared at her.

“My baby controls it?”

“On paper.”

“In reality, whoever controls the child controls the fortune.”

The room became silent.

Marcus understood the plan.

Elena was not only an unwanted outsider.

She was the legal doorway to the Carrington empire.

Sophie continued.

“Victoria was supposed to provoke you in front of the guests.”

“Richard would claim you became violent.”

“The family doctor had already prepared the commitment order.”

“What happened in the foyer was not an accident.”

Elena looked toward the monitor around her stomach.

“They built a trap around my baby shower.”

Sophie’s eyes filled with tears.

“I tried to warn you.”

“Grant saw me pick up your phone.”

“He dragged me through the service corridor.”

“Victoria told him to keep me underground until the clinic transport arrived.”

Naomi opened another evidence bag.

Inside was a signed transfer order.

It authorized Sophie’s admission to the same psychiatric clinic.

The diagnosis read severe delusional behavior.

Sophie had never been evaluated.

Marcus looked at Naomi.

“Freeze the clinic.”

“Already done.”

“Secure every patient.”

“Teams are moving now.”

Elena stared at the forged report.

“How many women have they done this to?”

May you like

Sophie answered quietly.

“More than we know.”
