Chapter 7 - THE ATTACK INSIDE THE HOSPITAL

At 3:18 in the morning, smoke filled the maternity hallway.
The fire alarm activated.
Nurses began moving patients toward the emergency stairs.
A man in hospital scrubs entered Elena’s room with a wheelchair.
He wore a surgical mask.
“Electrical fire,” he said.
“We need to evacuate.”
Elena saw the burn scar across his left hand.
Uncle Adrian.
She reached toward the emergency button.
Adrian caught her wrist.
A needle appeared beneath the folded blanket.
“Do not make me use this.”
“It will not be gentle to the baby.”
Elena froze.
Adrian moved her through the service elevator.
The smoke came from a small device hidden inside a supply closet.
There was no real fire.
In the underground garage, Grant Mercer waited beside a black medical van.
Grant had served as Richard’s security chief for eight years.
He had watched Victoria slap Elena.
He had locked Sophie inside the cellar.
Now he avoided Elena’s eyes.
“Richard sent you?” Elena asked.
Adrian secured one of her wrists to the wheelchair.
“Richard does not understand the scale of this problem.”
“Beatrice does.”
Grant opened the rear doors.
Inside were restraints, medication, and a neonatal transport unit.
Elena’s heart pounded.
They intended to take her to the clinic before federal prosecutors could obtain her testimony.
Adrian leaned close.
“You will be declared medically unstable.”
“The baby will be delivered under Carrington supervision.”
“Your father will be arrested for interfering with a lawful guardianship order.”
“No judge would sign it now.”
Adrian smiled.
“You still believe judges are difficult to purchase.”
The garage lights went out.
A voice came from behind the concrete pillars.
“You always preferred underground exits.”
Marcus stepped into view.
Adrian pressed the needle against Elena’s neck.
“You are slower than you used to be.”
Marcus stopped six feet away.
“I only need three seconds.”
Grant drew a pistol.
Naomi’s voice came through the garage speakers.
“Federal teams control every exit.”
“Place the weapon on the floor.”
Grant looked toward Adrian.
Adrian shook his head.
Marcus kept his eyes on Elena.
“Do you trust me for three seconds?”
She looked at him.
“Not completely.”
“That is fair.”
The answer surprised Adrian.
Elena watched Marcus’s gaze drop briefly toward the left wheel of the chair.
A childhood emergency signal.
Move when he looks away.
She slammed both feet against the concrete.
The wheelchair rolled backward into Adrian’s knees.
The needle moved from her neck.
Marcus crossed the distance.
He struck Adrian’s wrist.
The syringe fell.
Grant raised his pistol.
Naomi and two agents entered behind him.
Every body camera pointed directly at his face.
Grant slowly lowered the weapon.
Adrian attacked Marcus with the speed of a trained soldier.
Marcus blocked the first strike.
The second caught his shoulder.
He moved inside Adrian’s reach and drove him against the van.
“You taught me never to fight angry,” Adrian whispered.
Marcus locked a restraint around his wrist.
“I am not angry.”
“I am finished waiting.”
Naomi freed Elena.
Marcus knelt before touching her.
She reached for him first.
“You came again,” she whispered.
“Yes.”
This time, Marcus did not call it a promise.
May you like
He called it what it was.
A beginning.
