Chapter 18 - CLAIRE ELIZABETH VANCE

Elena went into labor during a summer thunderstorm.

Marcus drove her to Saint Gabriel Hospital in the same black SUV that had carried her from the Carrington estate.

This time, the hidden compartment held no military terminal.

It contained diapers, tools, and an emergency blanket.

Labor lasted twelve hours.

Marcus remained beside Elena.

He did not issue commands.

He offered his hand.

He spoke only when she asked.

At 5:06 in the morning, a baby girl entered the world screaming.

Dr. Chen placed her against Elena’s chest.

“She is healthy.”

Elena cried.

Marcus turned toward the window to hide his own tears.

“Dad.”

He looked back.

“Come here.”

Elena placed the child carefully into his arms.

Marcus had carried wounded soldiers across battlefields.

He had carried witnesses through burning buildings.

He had carried Claire upstairs during the final weeks of her illness.

Nothing had frightened him as much as holding his granddaughter.

“What is her name?” he whispered.

“Claire Elizabeth Vance.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

The baby wrapped one tiny hand around his finger.

Elena smiled through her tears.

“She will know the truth.”

“About her father.”

“About the Carringtons.”

“About you.”

“About Mom.”

Marcus looked down at Claire.

“All of it?”

“All of it.”

“We will not protect her by teaching her to doubt her own judgment.”

May you like

Marcus nodded.

“No more inherited silence.”
