Chapter 19 - ONE YEAR LATER

One year after the peanut tart, Noah turned four.

We had a small birthday party.

Ten children.

A dinosaur cake.

Every food label checked.

Two epinephrine injectors nearby.

No fear disguised as toughness.

Daniel came early.

He brought Noah a red bicycle.

Then handed me a new emergency kit.

Two injectors.

Antihistamine.

Printed action plan.

Pediatrician number.

I looked at him.

“You checked the expiration dates?”

“Yes.”

“Both?”

“Yes.”

Progress.

Noah ran toward him.

“Dad!”

Daniel knelt.

They hugged.

I watched.

Our marriage was over.

His fatherhood was not.

Those two truths no longer fought inside me.
