Chapter 13 - THE ESTATE WENT UP FOR SALE

The Hawthornes missed another covenant target.
Not because I forced them.
Because four years of artificial breathing room had allowed them to avoid restructuring.
Richard finally did what he should have done earlier.
He listed part of the estate.
Not the main mansion.
Sixty acres of unused vineyard land.
Margaret went ballistic.
“That land has been Hawthorne property for fifty-eight years.”
Richard answered.
“And debt has owned it for four.”
For once, he sounded tired of pretending.
The land sold.
Debt came down.
Staff remained employed.
The family survived.
Smaller.
Less theatrical.
Margaret blamed me anyway.
