Chapter 12 - DANIEL FINALLY ASKED THE RIGHT QUESTION

Daniel requested a meeting.
Attorneys present.
Public office.
No family.
He looked terrible.
“What do I have to do to see Noah more?”
Not.
How do I beat this?
Not.
How do I make you come home?
What do I have to do?
That was different.
I answered.
“Learn his emergency plan.”
“I know it.”
“Then why did I carry two EpiPens and you carried none?”
He looked down.
“Take the allergy-management class.”
“Attend his appointments.”
“Do not allow your mother unsupervised access.”
“Do not minimize what happened.”
He nodded.
Then asked.
“And us?”
“There is no us right now.”
His eyes filled.
“I love you.”
“I believe you.”
That surprised him.
“Then why—”
“Love does not automatically make you safe.”

He stopped.
