Chapter 9 – The Fall

The elevator dropped.
Metal screamed against metal.
The lights exploded in a shower of sparks as the cabin plunged into darkness.
Elena instinctively wrapped both arms around her stomach.
Julian threw himself over her body.
Marco slammed into the emergency control panel, desperately searching for the manual brake.
"Hold on!"
The elevator continued falling.
Five floors.
Six.
Seven.
Every impact rattled the steel cabin like it was about to tear apart.
Then—
BANG!
The emergency brakes caught.
The elevator jerked violently before slamming to a stop.
Silence.
Only the sound of heavy breathing filled the cabin.
Julian slowly opened his eyes.
"Elena?"
She didn't answer.
His heart nearly stopped.
"Elena!"
A faint groan escaped her lips.
"I'm... okay."
Relief flooded through him.
Then he looked down.
Fresh blood stained the floor beneath her.
Not from another wound.
From the pregnancy.
Marco checked the control panel.
"The elevator is wedged between two basement levels."
"Can we open the doors?"
He shook his head.
"They're jammed."
One of the guards pulled out a radio.
"Nothing."
"No signal."
The explosion had knocked out every communication system.
For the first time that night...
Julian realized they were trapped.
Three floors above...
Camila watched the security monitors inside the hotel's private surveillance room.
Every public camera had gone dark.
Only one hidden emergency feed remained.
The screen showed the damaged elevator shaft.
She smiled.
"Perfect."
A man standing beside her frowned.
"They survived."
"They won't for long."
He hesitated.
"What about Isabella?"
Camila slowly removed her diamond earrings and placed them on the desk.
"She served her purpose."
"You know the protocol."
The man nodded uneasily.
"Understood."
Camila looked back at the monitor.
"I've spent eight months cleaning up other people's mistakes."
"Tonight..."
"...I finish everything."
Far above the damaged basement...
Isabella Moretti stood alone in her private office.
The blast had shattered one of the floor-to-ceiling windows.
She never looked at it.
Instead...
She stared at an old framed photograph resting on her desk.
The picture showed three young adults smiling together nearly thirty years earlier.
Antonio Rossi.
Isabella Moretti.
And a woman Julian had never seen.
She gently touched Antonio's face in the photograph.
"I'm sorry."
"I couldn't protect your son either."
A hidden phone rang.
She answered immediately.
"They activated Phase Two."
The voice on the other end sounded panicked.
"They're trying to erase everyone."
Isabella closed her eyes.
"So..."
"They've betrayed me too."
She hung up.
Opened a hidden drawer.
Removed a silver pistol.
For the first time in decades...
She chose a side.
Inside the stalled elevator...
Elena suddenly gasped.
Julian knelt beside her.
"What is it?"
"The baby isn't moving."
His blood ran cold.
"You sure?"
She nodded, tears filling her eyes.
"He always kicks..."
"...when I'm scared."
Marco immediately crouched beside her.
"My wife is an obstetrician."
"I've learned a little."
He carefully placed two fingers against Elena's wrist.
Then gently rested his hand on her abdomen.
Everyone waited.
Seconds felt like hours.
Then—
A tiny movement.
Another.
Marco smiled with visible relief.
"There."
"He's moving."
Julian closed his eyes.
For a brief moment...
He allowed himself to breathe.
The peace lasted less than ten seconds.
One of the guards suddenly looked toward the ceiling.
"Did you hear that?"
Faint scraping.
Like metal dragging across concrete.
Marco frowned.
"Above us."
The sound grew louder.
Then came a mechanical whine.
Julian looked upward.
"What is that?"
Marco's face drained of color.
"No..."
He rushed to inspect the control panel.
"They're lowering something."
"What?"
Before Marco could answer—
A long steel drill burst through the roof of the elevator.
It punched straight through the ceiling, missing Julian by less than a foot.
Sparks exploded everywhere.
The drill began spinning.
Cutting.
Slowly carving a perfect circle through the roof.
"They're coming in!" one guard shouted.
Marco drew his pistol.
"We have seconds."
The spinning blade grew louder.
Steel peeled away.
Light poured through the widening hole.
A masked face appeared above them.
Then another.
Then a third.
One of them looked down and smiled.
"Found them."
He pulled the pin from a small black cylinder.
Julian immediately recognized it.
Not a grenade.
A gas canister.
The masked man dropped it into the elevator.
The cylinder hit the floor and began releasing a thick white vapor.
Marco shouted,
"Everyone cover your mouth!"
Julian wrapped his jacket around Elena's face.
"What is it?"
Marco looked at the markings on the canister.
His expression turned to horror.
"It's not tear gas."
"It's anesthetic."
"They don't want us dead..."
He looked directly at Julian.
"They want us alive."
The white gas rapidly filled the elevator.
Julian's vision blurred.
Marco fired three shots upward.
The masked men disappeared from the opening.
Julian struggled to stay awake.
He tightened his arms around Elena.
"I won't let them take you."
Elena reached weakly into his jacket pocket.
Without him noticing...
She slipped the USB drive into the lining beneath the collar.
Then she whispered the last words he heard before darkness consumed him.
"If only one of us wakes up..."
"...find our son."
Julian tried to answer.
But everything faded to black.
May you like
The last thing he saw...
Was a gloved hand reaching down through the hole in the elevator roof.
