Chapter 8 – The Woman Who Was Never a Victim

Julian's eyes locked onto the computer screen.
IF YOU ARE WATCHING THIS... NEVER TRUST CAMILA.
For one frozen second, no one spoke.
Marco was the first to react.
"Boss, we have to move."
Julian didn't take his eyes off the message.
"Copy the drive."
Marco immediately pulled a portable data reader from his tactical bag.
One of his security specialists connected the USB and began duplicating every file.
"Three minutes," the technician said.
"We don't have three minutes," Julian replied.
Another painful cry escaped Elena.
She doubled over in his arms, clutching her stomach.
"The baby..."
Julian looked down.
Blood continued soaking through the gray housekeeping uniform.
Fear unlike anything he had ever experienced gripped his heart.
"Stay with me."
"I'm here."
"I'm not leaving you again."
Above them...
Camila stood alone inside Julian's luxury suite.
She slowly poured herself a glass of champagne.
From the balcony window, she watched flashing emergency lights surround the hotel.
Instead of looking frightened...
She smiled.
Her phone vibrated.
A single encrypted message appeared.
TARGET HAS REUNITED WITH SUBJECT.
Camila typed only three words.
Proceed to Phase Two.
She deleted the conversation immediately.
Then she calmly reapplied her lipstick in the mirror.
A gentle knock came at the door.
"Miss Ortega?"
"Come in."
One of the hotel's assistant managers entered nervously.
"Mrs. Moretti wishes to know whether you intend to leave."
Camila shook her head.
"No."
"I've waited eight months."
"I want to watch this ending myself."
Meanwhile...
Julian carried Elena toward the freight elevator.
Every step felt too slow.
Every second mattered.
Elena's breathing became increasingly uneven.
She rested her head against his shoulder.
"I have something..."
"...inside my pocket."
Julian carefully reached into her uniform.
He pulled out a small velvet pouch.
Inside lay two wedding rings.
His own.
And Elena's.
He stared at them silently.
"I wanted to return yours..."
Elena whispered.
"...the night I disappeared."
Julian closed his hand around the rings.
"I would've put it right back on your finger."
Tears slipped down Elena's cheeks.
"I know that now."
The freight elevator doors opened.
Marco's team stepped inside first, checking every corner.
"Clear."
Julian entered with Elena.
The doors began closing.
At the last possible second—
A polished leather shoe stopped them.
The doors slid back open.
Isabella Moretti stood outside.
Alone.
No bodyguards.
No weapons.
She looked at Elena with unexpected sadness.
"It's happening sooner than I expected."
Julian moved protectively in front of Elena.
"Stay away from my family."
Isabella ignored him.
She looked only at Elena.
"You watched the recording."
Elena nodded weakly.
"You murdered Antonio Rossi."
Isabella slowly closed her eyes.
"No."
"I witnessed his death."
Julian frowned.
"What?"
"I didn't kill your father."
Silence filled the elevator.
"You ordered it."
"I tried to stop it."
Julian's voice hardened.
"The recording says otherwise."
"It says exactly what someone wanted you to believe."
She looked directly into Julian's eyes.
"Have you noticed something strange?"
"The camera never showed the shooter."
Julian's heartbeat slowed.
She was right.
The video showed Antonio collapsing.
It captured voices.
But...
The actual killer never appeared.
Almost as if...
Someone had deliberately edited the footage.
Marco interrupted.
"Boss."
"The copy is complete."
Julian nodded.
"Let's go."
Before the elevator doors closed again, Isabella spoke one final sentence.
"When you watch the original..."
"...you'll discover your greatest enemy has been standing beside you for months."
The doors slid shut.
Julian looked at Elena.
"Camila."
Elena slowly nodded.
"I recognized her."
"When?"
"The day you walked into the lobby."
Julian stared at her.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Elena lowered her eyes.
"Because..."
"...she was watching us."
Back upstairs...
Camila walked through the executive lounge as though she owned the building.
A hotel employee discreetly handed her a black envelope.
She opened it.
Inside was a recent photograph.
Julian holding Elena in his arms.
Alive.
Together.
Camila's smile vanished.
"So..."
"He found her."
The employee spoke quietly.
"Should we activate the contingency plan?"
Camila looked toward the city skyline.
"No."
"The contingency plan is already in motion."
She removed a small silver remote from her handbag.
Beneath a protective cover was a single red button.
Without hesitation...
She pressed it.
Deep below the hotel...
Marco's communications specialist suddenly froze.
"Boss!"
Julian turned.
"What is it?"
"I've lost every camera feed."
Every screen went black.
The emergency power failed.
Darkness swallowed the underground garage.
Then—
The entire building trembled.
A deafening explosion erupted somewhere beneath the hotel's east wing.
Concrete cracked.
Sprinkler pipes burst overhead.
Water poured from the ceiling.
Marco shouted,
"Structural collapse!"
The floor lurched violently beneath them.
The freight elevator shuddered.
Its cables screamed under unbearable strain.
Elena grabbed Julian's arm.
"Julian..."
He tightened his hold around her.
"I've got you."
A metallic snap echoed above.
Marco looked upward in horror.
"The cable..."
Another snap.
Then another.
His face turned white.
"The elevator's falling!"
With a violent jolt—
May you like
The main cable finally broke.
The elevator plunged straight into darkness.
