Chapter 14 – The Man Behind the Smoke

The red laser never wavered.

It rested on the tiny blue blanket wrapped around Julian's newborn son.

The baby cried louder, completely unaware that dozens of weapons were aimed in his direction.

Julian instinctively pulled the child closer against his chest.

His heart pounded.

"Show yourself," he shouted.

The mysterious voice chuckled through the thick smoke.

"I've waited thirty years for this moment."

"You'll see me soon enough."

Another laser dot appeared.

This one settled on Elena's forehead.

Julian's blood ran cold.

Marco immediately stepped between Elena and the unseen sniper.

"Boss," he whispered, "there are at least four shooters."

"They're surrounding us."

The smoke slowly began to clear.

Heavy boots echoed across the flooded marble floor.

One figure emerged.

Then another.

Six men in black tactical uniforms formed two perfect lines.

Between them walked a tall man in an immaculate charcoal-gray suit.

He looked to be around sixty-five.

Silver hair.

Perfect posture.

Calm blue eyes.

He carried no visible weapon.

He didn't need one.

Every armed man in the chamber lowered his head as he passed.

Even Camila.

She stared at him with unmistakable respect.

"Sir."

Julian frowned.

"So..."

"You're the one giving the orders."

The man smiled politely.

"No."

"I've simply been cleaning up other people's mistakes."

Isabella's face turned ghostly pale.

"No..."

She whispered.

"It can't be."

The man turned toward her.

"Hello, Isabella."

"I've missed you."

Julian looked from one to the other.

"You know him?"

Isabella's voice trembled for the first time in decades.

"This..."

"...is Adrian Moretti."

Julian searched his memory.

The name meant nothing.

Then Isabella said the words that made every piece of the puzzle shift.

"My older brother."

"I buried you."

Adrian smiled.

"You buried an empty coffin."

Camila stepped beside Adrian.

"Victor thought he controlled the families."

"He was wrong."

She looked toward Julian.

"Adrian created the bloodline agreement."

"He created the Archive."

"He created the Vault."

Julian tightened his hold on his son.

"What do you want?"

Adrian's eyes settled on the newborn.

"Exactly what your father promised me."

"My inheritance."

Julian shook his head.

"My father promised you nothing."

Adrian laughed softly.

"Antonio Rossi signed a contract."

"He regretted it."

"But contracts don't disappear because someone changes their mind."

Elena slowly stepped beside Julian.

Her face was pale from blood loss, yet her voice remained steady.

"You murdered Antonio."

Adrian looked genuinely offended.

"No."

"I loved Antonio."

"He was like a brother."

"Then why did he die?"

Adrian sighed.

"Because he tried to expose us."

Silence filled the Archive.

Julian stared at him.

"You just admitted it."

"I admitted he died."

"I never said I pulled the trigger."

Marco discreetly pressed a small transmitter hidden beneath his sleeve.

One silent click.

A green light flashed once.

His emergency beacon.

If any of his outside teams were still alive...

They would know exactly where he was.

Adrian noticed the movement.

Without looking away from Julian, he said calmly,

"Remove his hand."

One mercenary immediately raised his rifle.

Marco fired first.

His bullet struck the mercenary squarely in the shoulder.

The chamber erupted into chaos.

Automatic gunfire exploded from every direction.

Julian threw himself behind a massive steel archive cabinet, shielding Elena and the baby with his own body.

Bullets tore through shelves filled with decades of hidden records.

Thousands of classified documents filled the air like snow.

Camila sprinted toward the center console.

She typed a rapid sequence into the security system.

A computerized voice echoed throughout the underground complex.

"Final Purge Activated."

Julian looked toward the countdown clock.

02:47

"What does Final Purge mean?" he shouted.

Isabella's face turned white.

"It destroys everything."

"The Archive."

"The Vault."

"The evidence."

"The building."

Marco looked up sharply.

"Building?"

Isabella nodded.

"The entire underground facility."

Adrian remained perfectly calm.

He looked at Camila with disappointment.

"You've become impatient."

Camila smiled.

"I learned from you."

"If I can't own the empire..."

"...no one will."

She pressed the final confirmation key.

The countdown changed.

02:00

Red warning lights began flashing faster.

Some of Adrian's own men looked nervous.

"Sir..."

"We have to leave."

Adrian ignored them.

His eyes never left the newborn in Julian's arms.

"I'll make one final offer."

Julian didn't answer.

"Give me the child."

"I'll let you and Elena walk away."

Julian laughed bitterly.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"No."

"I expect you to protect your family."

Suddenly—

A soft voice echoed from behind one of the archive shelves.

"Daddy..."

Everyone froze.

Emily.

The little girl slowly stepped into view.

She wasn't alone.

She held the hand of an elderly janitor Julian had never seen before.

The old man looked directly at Isabella.

Then at Adrian.

Finally...

He removed his worn maintenance cap.

Adrian's calm expression vanished.

"No..."

He whispered.

"You're impossible."

The old janitor smiled.

"I hear that a lot."

Julian frowned.

"Who is he?"

The old man looked straight at Julian.

"My name is Gabriel Rossi."

Julian's knees nearly gave out.

There was only one Gabriel Rossi.

His grandfather.

The man the entire family believed had died...

Thirty years ago.

The old man reached into his jacket and held up a weathered leather notebook.

"I've kept the original ledger safe for three decades."

"And everything your father died trying to protect..."

"...is written inside."
