Chapter 16 – The Door That Recognized Blood

The first explosion ripped through the Archive like an earthquake.

The floor lurched violently beneath everyone's feet.

Steel shelves toppled one after another, crashing into rows of burning files.

The ceiling cracked.

Chunks of concrete rained down.

Julian instinctively threw himself over Elena, Emily, and the baby.

A slab of concrete slammed into the floor where they had been standing only seconds before.

Marco shouted over the roar.

"Boss!"

"The whole chamber is collapsing!"

The countdown on Adrian's detonator continued.

00:28

00:27

Adrian calmly backed toward the smoke.

"You've already lost."

"No one leaves this place alive."

He disappeared behind the flames with the remaining mercenaries.

Julian started after him.

Marco grabbed his arm.

"Forget him!"

"If we don't get everyone out now..."

"...there won't be anyone left to catch him."

Julian stopped.

Marco was right.

His family came first.

Isabella hurried toward the massive blast door.

The polished steel stood nearly twenty feet high.

No keypad.

No lock.

No visible mechanism.

Only one symbol.

A silver crescent moon engraved in the center.

The same mark resting beneath the baby's tiny wrist.

Julian looked at her.

"What do we do?"

She swallowed.

"The child."

"The sensor needs his blood."

Elena immediately pulled the baby closer.

"No."

Her voice trembled.

"He's only a few hours old."

"We're not hurting him."

Isabella shook her head.

"It only needs a drop."

Julian gently touched Elena's shoulder.

"If this door doesn't open..."

"...none of us survive."

Elena closed her eyes.

Tears rolled silently down her face.

Finally...

She nodded.

"Do it."

Marco removed a sterile emergency lancet from his medical pouch.

He knelt beside Elena.

"I'm sorry, little man."

With extraordinary care...

He pricked the baby's tiny heel.

The newborn let out a soft cry.

A single crimson drop appeared.

Before it could fall...

The silver crescent on the door began glowing.

A thin red beam swept across the baby's heel.

The entire chamber vibrated.

A deep mechanical voice echoed through hidden speakers.

"Biological verification accepted."

"Welcome, Heir of the Rossi Line."

Massive steel gears hidden inside the mountain began turning.

The blast door slowly unlocked.

Julian stared in disbelief.

"It really worked..."

As the door opened...

A narrow stone tunnel stretched toward daylight.

Fresh ocean air rushed inside.

For the first time in what felt like forever...

There was hope.

Marco immediately pointed.

"Go!"

"I'll cover the rear."

Julian shook his head.

"We leave together."

Marco smiled.

"You hired me to protect your family."

"I'm doing my job."

Before Julian could argue—

Machine-gun fire erupted from behind the burning shelves.

Adrian's remaining mercenaries had regrouped.

Bullets ricocheted off the steel walls.

Marco and his team returned fire.

"Move!"

Julian took Elena's hand.

Emily clung tightly to Elena's uniform.

Gabriel struggled to stand.

Julian rushed back and helped his grandfather onto his shoulder.

"We're leaving together."

Gabriel looked at him with pride.

"You really are Antonio's son."

Halfway through the escape tunnel...

Another explosion thundered behind them.

The shockwave knocked everyone to the ground.

The baby began crying.

Julian shielded him with his own body.

Dust filled the air.

The tunnel ceiling groaned ominously.

Marco's voice echoed from the entrance.

"GO!"

Julian looked back.

Marco and three security officers remained at the tunnel entrance, exchanging gunfire with Adrian's men.

A burning support beam crashed between them.

The tunnel split in two.

"Marco!"

Julian shouted.

Marco looked through the flames.

For a brief second...

Their eyes met.

Marco smiled.

"Get your family home, Boss."

Then the ceiling collapsed.

A wall of fire and concrete separated them forever.

Julian pounded against the rubble.

"Marco!"

No answer.

Only the roar of the fire.

Elena gently placed a hand on his shoulder.

"We have to keep moving."

He wanted to stay.

He wanted to dig through the debris with his bare hands.

But he looked down.

His newborn son slept peacefully against Elena's chest.

Emily was crying silently.

Gabriel could barely stand.

Julian clenched his fists.

Then turned away.

Minutes later...

A brilliant light appeared ahead.

The tunnel opened onto a rocky cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.

Cold night air rushed across their faces.

Far below...

Waves crashed against the rocks.

A black helicopter waited on a small landing platform.

Its rotors were already spinning.

Julian frowned.

"Whose helicopter is that?"

Before anyone answered...

The cockpit door opened.

The pilot removed his helmet.

Julian froze.

"No..."

The man smiled.

"I told your father..."

"...I'd bring you home if he couldn't."

Julian recognized him instantly.

Luca Ferraro.

The former Italian special forces commander who had vanished after Antonio Rossi's funeral fifteen years earlier.

But before Julian could step toward the helicopter—

Three sharp gunshots echoed from the tunnel behind them.

Gabriel staggered.

Blood spread across his back.

Julian caught him before he fell.

The old man smiled weakly.

"I guess..."

"...he wasn't finished with me."

At the mouth of the tunnel...

Adrian Moretti emerged through the smoke.

His suit was torn.

His face was streaked with blood and ash.

But his pistol remained steady.

Pointed directly at Julian's son.

He smiled.

"You've made one mistake, Julian."

Julian slowly stood.

"What mistake?"

Adrian's smile widened.

"You assumed..."

"...I came here for the Vault."

He raised the pistol with both hands.

May you like

"I came here..."

"...for the boy."
