Chapter 1 – The Woman Who Pretended Not to Know Her Husband

Julian Rossi barely noticed the stunned faces surrounding him.
Guests whispered.
The concierge shifted nervously.
Even Camila's hand tightening around his arm faded into the background.
All Julian could see was Elena.
Eight months.
Two hundred and forty-three days.
That was how long she had been gone.
Not a single phone call.
Not a single message.
No ransom demand.
No farewell.
Only an empty closet, a missing wedding ring, and a handwritten note that simply read:
"Please don't look for me."
For eight months, he had convinced himself she had chosen another life.
Now he knew he had been wrong.
Painfully wrong.
His eyes drifted to her stomach.
She was at least eight months pregnant.
His heart pounded so violently he could barely breathe.
The child...
It had to be his.
Unless...
The thought died before it could fully form.
No.
He knew Elena.
She would never betray him.
"Look at me," Julian whispered.
Elena didn't.
Instead, she adjusted the towels on the housekeeping cart with trembling hands.
"Sir," she repeated politely, "other guests are waiting."
Sir.
Every time she called him that, it felt like another knife twisting inside his chest.
Camila laughed softly.
"This is ridiculous."
She stepped closer to Elena, examining her stained uniform with open disgust.
"So this is the woman everyone used to talk about."
Elena remained silent.
"I expected someone..." Camila tilted her head. "...more impressive."
Julian finally looked at Camila.
His expression was cold enough to silence her immediately.
"Don't."
The single word carried the same authority that had built billion-dollar companies.
Camila swallowed.
She had never heard him speak to her like that.
Julian stepped toward Elena.
"You disappeared."
No answer.
"You left everything."
Silence.
"You left me."
For the first time, Elena's eyes flickered.
Pain.
Not anger.
Not guilt.
Pain.
It disappeared almost instantly.
"I'm sorry, sir."
Julian reached for her hand.
The moment his fingers brushed against hers, Elena jerked away as though touching him would burn her.
"Please don't."
Those three words sounded almost desperate.
Before Julian could ask why, another voice interrupted.
"Miss Carter."
A tall man in a navy management suit approached from the elevators.
He wore the gold badge of the hotel's executive operations director.
His smile never reached his eyes.
"Your floor inspection is overdue."
Elena immediately lowered her head.
"Yes, Mr. Mercer."
Julian frowned.
Miss Carter?
"What did he call you?"
Elena pushed the cart forward.
"I have to return to work."
"You didn't answer me."
"My name is Elena Carter now."
The sentence landed like an explosion.
Julian stared after her.
"No."
She stopped walking.
"My name is Elena Rossi."
The words escaped his lips almost involuntarily.
"You're my wife."
Several guests gasped.
Mercer's polite smile vanished.
"I believe you've mistaken one of my employees for someone else."
Julian slowly turned toward him.
"And who exactly are you?"
"Richard Mercer."
He extended a hand.
"Director of Operations."
Julian ignored it.
"Why is my wife using another surname?"
Mercer's expression remained perfectly composed.
"I'm afraid I have no knowledge of your personal matters."
Julian looked back at Elena.
"Tell me."
Her shoulders trembled.
"Tell me you aren't my wife."
Seconds passed.
She couldn't say it.
Instead, tears quietly gathered in her eyes.
That was all the answer Julian needed.
He suddenly noticed something strange.
Elena wasn't crying because she was afraid of him.
She was terrified of someone else.
His instincts sharpened.
For years, those instincts had helped him survive ruthless negotiations, corporate sabotage, and organized crime extortion attempts.
That same instinct was screaming now.
Someone was controlling this situation.
Someone wanted Elena silent.
Someone inside this hotel.
Mercer cleared his throat.
"If you'll excuse us—"
Julian stepped directly into his path.
"No."
His voice echoed through the marble lobby.
"No one is taking my wife anywhere."
The silence became suffocating.
Then...
A little girl, no older than six, came running from behind the concierge desk.
She hugged Elena's legs tightly.
"Mama!"
Every head turned.
Julian felt the world stop spinning.

The child looked up at Elena with enormous brown eyes...
The exact same deep brown eyes Julian saw every morning in his own reflection.
