Chapter 13 – The Betrayal No One Saw Coming

The chamber fell silent.
Camila's pistol remained fixed on the newborn sleeping peacefully in Victor DeLuca's arms.
Twenty mercenaries spread through the Archive with practiced precision, sealing every exit.
No one spoke.
No one dared move.
Even the baby remained asleep.
Camila smiled.
"I've spent years watching powerful people fight over fortunes."
She slowly cocked the hammer of the pistol.
"And do you know what I learned?"
Julian stepped in front of Elena instinctively.
"What?"
"The richest people in the world always make the same mistake."
"They think money is power."
She looked down at the sleeping infant.
"It isn't."
"Control is."
Victor's expression darkened.
"You've become greedy."
Camila laughed.
"You taught me greed."
Victor frowned.
"I don't even know you."
"No?"
Camila reached into her tactical vest and removed an old photograph.
She tossed it onto the marble floor.
It slid to Victor's wheelchair.
His face immediately lost all color.
The photograph showed a young woman holding a little girl no older than five.
The little girl was unmistakably Camila.
Victor whispered,
"Clara..."
Camila's smile disappeared.
"My mother."
The chamber remained silent.
Victor slowly looked back up.
"I paid for her treatment."
"You abandoned her."
"I had no choice."
"You had every choice."
Camila's voice finally cracked with years of buried pain.
"My mother died believing you would come back."
"You never did."
Victor lowered his head.
For the first time...
The legendary financier looked like a broken old man.
Julian used the distraction to quietly signal Marco.
One subtle hand movement.
Marco understood immediately.
Split the team.
Circle left.
Create an opening.
His security officers slowly shifted positions, pretending to obey the mercenaries' commands.
Camila never noticed.
Her attention remained fixed on Victor.
"I spent twenty years becoming exactly what you created."
She stepped closer.
"You taught me that bloodlines matter."
"Power matters."
"Legacy matters."
"So tonight..."
"...I'll inherit all of it."
Victor looked at the baby.
"You'll never control him."
Camila smiled.
"I don't need to."
She reached into her pocket and removed a syringe filled with clear liquid.
"I only need his DNA."
Julian's heart stopped.
"What is that?"
Camila looked at him.
"Insurance."
Elena suddenly stepped forward.
"No."
Julian grabbed her arm.
"Elena!"
She gently pulled free.
"If she wants something..."
"...let her take me instead."
Camila laughed softly.
"You still don't understand."
She raised the syringe.
"I've never wanted you."
"I've never wanted Julian."
"I've never even wanted the money."
She looked lovingly at the sleeping newborn.
"I wanted access."
Julian frowned.
"Access to what?"
Camila's smile widened.
"The Vault."
Isabella suddenly whispered,
"Oh, God..."
Julian turned.
"What Vault?"
She looked horrified.
"I prayed Victor had destroyed it."
Victor slowly closed his eyes.
"I should have."
Camila answered instead.
"Beneath this Archive..."
"...is another chamber."
"The original vault."
"It contains every secret transaction..."
"...every hidden fortune..."
"...every account controlled by Europe's oldest families."
She slowly pointed toward the baby's wrist.
"And only someone carrying that bloodline..."
"...can unlock it."
Julian stared at his son.
"So everything..."
"...was because of a vault?"
Camila shook her head.
"No."
"The vault is only the key."
"The real treasure..."
"...is what it protects."
Before Julian could ask another question—
A loud explosion shook the Archive.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
One of Camila's mercenaries shouted into his radio.
"We've got incoming!"
Camila frowned.
"What?"
"Unknown tactical team!"
"They're breaching the north entrance!"
Automatic gunfire erupted somewhere beyond the steel corridors.
Victor looked genuinely confused.
"I didn't bring anyone."
Marco lowered his weapon slightly.
"Neither did we."
Another explosion.
Closer this time.
The massive steel doors at the end of the chamber buckled inward.
A smoke grenade rolled across the floor.
White smoke rapidly filled the Archive.
Camila shouted,
"Hold your positions!"
Dark figures emerged through the smoke.
Black uniforms.
Night-vision helmets.
No insignias.
No identifying marks.
They fired with military precision.
Within seconds, three of Camila's mercenaries were down.
One of the newcomers shouted,
"Secure the child!"
Julian frowned.
"They're not here for Camila..."
Marco's expression hardened.
"They're here for the baby."
The battle erupted.
Bullets tore through shelves filled with decades of hidden records.
Documents exploded into the air like a blizzard of paper.
Fire alarms screamed.
Sprinklers activated.
Water poured from the ceiling.
In the chaos, Victor pulled the newborn close to his chest.
Then a single rifle shot echoed above the rest.
Victor jerked violently.
A dark stain spread across his white shirt.
The baby began crying for the first time.
Victor looked down at the blood spreading across his chest.
Then at Julian.
With his last remaining strength, he stretched out his trembling arms.
"Take him..."
Julian sprinted forward.
Victor placed the newborn into his son's arms.
His voice was barely audible.
"The... truth..."
"...isn't in the Archive..."
He coughed blood.
"It's..."
Another shot rang out.
Victor's body slumped forward.
He died before finishing the sentence.
Julian held his crying son tightly against his chest.
Before he could retreat—
A laser sight settled on the baby's tiny blanket.
Someone in the smoke had a clear shot.
And a calm male voice echoed through the chamber.
"Mr. Rossi..."
May you like
"Hand me the child."
"Or your wife dies first."
