Chapter 6 – The Lie That Separated Them

The steel door trembled beneath a heavy blow.
Dust drifted from the ceiling.
Inside the cramped maintenance room, Elena instinctively wrapped both arms around her stomach.
Her baby shifted beneath her palms, as though sensing the fear coursing through her body.
Sofia quietly extinguished the lantern.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Only a thin strip of light seeped through the gap beneath the steel door.
Outside, Isabella's calm voice echoed through the concrete tunnel.
"Elena."
"I've never enjoyed violence."
"But I have learned that people make predictable choices."
She paused.
"They always choose the person they love most."
Another loud bang shook the hinges.
"I'll ask one last time."
"Open the door."
Neither woman answered.
A faint smile crossed Sofia's face.
"Good."
"That means she still doesn't know."
Elena looked at her in confusion.
"Know what?"
Sofia opened her mouth—
But another explosion against the door silenced her.
Meanwhile...
Julian refused to take his eyes off Isabella.
"If Elena gets hurt," he said quietly, "there won't be a place on earth where you can hide."
Isabella laughed softly.
"You still think this is about hiding?"
She stepped closer.
"This is about inheritance."
Julian frowned.
"What inheritance?"
"The one your family stole twenty-nine years ago."
His expression hardened.
"My family stole nothing."
"That's what your father told you."
Julian's pulse quickened.
His father had died five years earlier.
A respected businessman.
A philanthropist.
A man the world admired.
Isabella studied his face.
"He never told you, did he?"
"Told me what?"
Before she could answer, Marco stormed into the corridor with six members of Julian's private security team.
Every weapon immediately locked onto Isabella's guards.
The tension became suffocating.
Marco stood beside Julian.
"You okay?"
Julian nodded.
"Barely."
Marco lowered his voice.
"I found something."
"What?"
"The hotel employee named Elena Carter..."
Julian looked at him.
"Doesn't exist."
"I know."
Marco shook his head.
"No."
"I mean literally."
"The identity belongs to a woman who died eleven years ago."
Julian stared at him.
"What?"
"The social security number."
"The birth certificate."
"The employment file."
"Everything belongs to someone buried in Florence."
Julian slowly turned toward Isabella.
"You gave my wife a dead woman's identity."
"I gave her survival."
Inside the hidden room...
Sofia pulled a faded envelope from beneath the floorboards.
"You deserve the truth."
She handed it to Elena.
Inside were newspaper clippings.
Court documents.
Hospital records.
One old photograph.
Elena's breathing became uneven.
The photograph showed Julian standing beside another woman.
She was beautiful.
Pregnant.
Julian's hand rested gently on her stomach.
The date stamped across the bottom read:
Nine months before Julian met Elena.
"No..."
Elena whispered.
"This isn't possible."
Sofia sighed.
"Keep looking."
Elena turned the photograph over.
Written on the back was one sentence.
Witness Protection File – Operation Verona
Her heart skipped.
Witness protection?
Julian hadn't been posing with a lover.
He had been protecting a government witness.
Everything she'd believed...
Everything she'd cried over...
Had been another lie.
Then she reached the hospital report.
The patient's name made her blood freeze.
Camila Ortega.
Diagnosis:
False Pregnancy.
Date:
Nine months ago.
Elena's hands began shaking violently.
Camila...
Had never been pregnant.
Yet...
She clearly remembered the tabloid headlines.
"Business Tycoon Julian Rossi Expecting Child with New Partner."
Every newspaper had carried the story.
Every television network repeated it.
She had believed it.
She had convinced herself Julian had already replaced her.
Tears streamed down her face.
"He never betrayed me..."
Sofia gently squeezed her shoulder.
"No."
"They made sure both of you believed the other had."
Back in the corridor...
Julian's phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
He answered immediately.
"This is Rossi."
A distorted male voice spoke calmly.
"You have exactly one hour."
Julian glanced toward Isabella.
"What do you want?"
"The truth."
"I already want that."
"No."
The voice chuckled.
"You want Elena."
"What you need..."
"...is to learn why she disappeared."
Julian's grip tightened around the phone.
"Tell me."
"Eight months ago..."
"...your wife witnessed a murder."
Julian's heart stopped.
"What?"
"Not just any murder."
"The murder of the only man who could expose a thirty-year conspiracy."
Julian looked directly at Isabella.
She was smiling.
As though she could hear every word.
The caller continued.
"Elena wasn't kidnapped because she was your wife."
A pause.
Then the sentence that changed everything.
"She was hunted..."
"...because she became the only living witness."
The line went dead.
Julian slowly lowered the phone.
Pieces of the puzzle finally began aligning.
The forged letters.
The fake identities.
The disappearances.
The constant surveillance.
None of it had begun because of him.
It had begun...
Because Elena had seen something she was never supposed to see.
At that exact moment...
The steel door deep beneath the hotel finally gave way.
With a deafening crash, it burst inward.
Armed men flooded into the hidden room.
Sofia stepped in front of Elena without hesitation.
"Run!"
A gunshot thundered through the darkness.
Elena screamed.
Sofia collapsed to the concrete floor.
The wooden box flew from Elena's hands.
Its contents scattered across the tunnel—
Her wedding ring...
Julian's letter...
Family photographs...
And one small USB drive hidden beneath the false bottom.
Every gunman froze.
Their leader shouted,
"Forget the woman!"
"Find the drive!"
Elena stared at the tiny black USB lying just inches away.
For the first time...
May you like
She realized that whatever was stored on it...
Was more valuable than her own life.
