Chapter 5 – The Woman Behind the Empire

The corridor was silent except for the shrill alarm echoing through the hotel.
Richard Mercer's body lay motionless on the marble floor.
No one moved to help him.
No one even looked at him.
Every pair of eyes remained fixed on the elegant woman standing beneath the crimson emergency lights.
Isabella Moretti.
She appeared to be in her early sixties, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit with a single pearl brooch pinned to her lapel. Her silver-streaked hair was swept neatly behind her shoulders, and her posture carried the effortless confidence of someone who had spent a lifetime giving orders that were never questioned.
She smiled warmly.
It somehow felt colder than the rifles pointed at Julian.
"Mr. Rossi," she said. "You've caused me quite an inconvenience."
Julian slowly rose to his feet.
"You kidnapped my wife."
Isabella tilted her head.
"Kidnapped?"
"What a dramatic word."
"I protected her."
Julian's jaw tightened.
"Protected her by forcing her to scrub hotel floors while pregnant?"
A faint laugh escaped Isabella's lips.
"You believe you've seen the entire story after only ten minutes."
She glanced toward Mercer's body.
"Richard always lacked discipline."
One of the armed men asked quietly,
"Should we remove him, ma'am?"
"Later."
Her voice remained perfectly calm.
"He made his choice."
Julian looked at Mercer.
The man had died trying to help Elena escape.
Whatever role he had played before...
He had changed sides in the end.
Julian looked back at Isabella.
"Where is Elena?"
"I'm afraid she's somewhere you cannot reach."
Julian took a deliberate step forward.
"You've underestimated me."
"No."
Isabella smiled again.
"I've studied you for years."
"You negotiate aggressively."
"You rarely lose your temper."
"And you're willing to sacrifice almost anything for the people you love."
She paused.
"Almost."
Those last words struck him like a warning.
Meanwhile...
Inside the hidden maintenance tunnel, Elena struggled to catch her breath.
The narrow passage stretched beneath the entire hotel.
Cold concrete walls surrounded her.
Only dim maintenance lights illuminated the darkness.
She rested one hand beneath her swollen stomach.
The baby kicked.
"It's okay," she whispered.
"We're almost there."
But deep inside...
She knew she wasn't speaking to the baby.
She was trying to convince herself.
At the end of the tunnel stood an old steel door.
She inserted the silver key.
The lock clicked open.
Inside waited the elderly housekeeper who had given her the key.
Her name was Sofia.
She quickly pulled Elena inside and locked the door.
"You made it."
"Barely."
Sofia hurried to a dusty cabinet and removed a weathered wooden box.
"I've kept this hidden for eight months."
She handed it to Elena.
"You'll need it now."
Elena slowly opened the lid.
Inside...
Lay her wedding ring.
Her passport.
Her driver's license.
A stack of family photographs.
And a sealed envelope with Julian's handwriting on it.
Her hands began shaking.
"I thought these were destroyed."
"They wanted you to believe that."
Back in the corridor, Isabella walked calmly toward Julian.
"You've spent eight months believing Elena abandoned you."
"Correct?"
Julian didn't answer.
"You hated her."
"I never hated her."
"You doubted her."
Silence.
For the first time since seeing Elena again...
Julian couldn't honestly deny it.
He had searched for months.
Then came the forged resignation letter.
The empty bank accounts.
The disappearance.
Eventually...
He had begun asking himself the question he hated most.
Had Elena chosen to leave?
Isabella watched the realization spread across his face.
"Exactly."
"You doubted her."
Julian's voice hardened.
"Someone made sure I would."
"Indeed."
She clasped her gloved hands behind her back.
"People are remarkably easy to manipulate."
"A forged document."
"A missing phone."
"A few carefully placed witnesses."
"Soon even devoted husbands begin questioning their wives."
Julian felt anger building inside him.
"You orchestrated all of it."
"No."
Her answer surprised him.
"I merely allowed it to happen."
"Who?"
Julian demanded.
"Who wanted my wife gone?"
Before Isabella could answer...
One of the tactical officers hurried toward her.
"Ma'am."
"We've searched the maintenance tunnels."
"No sign of Target Seven."
Target Seven.
Julian immediately knew they meant Elena.
Isabella's pleasant expression finally cracked.
For the first time...
She looked genuinely annoyed.
"Impossible."
"The emergency exit?"
"Empty."
"The garage?"
"Empty."
"The rooftop?"
"Nothing."
Julian caught the smallest flicker of satisfaction inside himself.
Elena had escaped.
At least for now.
Far beneath the hotel, Sofia unfolded the sealed envelope.
"This came from Julian."
"He wrote it the week after you disappeared."
"I intercepted it before they burned everything."
Elena stared at the familiar handwriting.
Tears blurred her vision.
She slowly unfolded the letter.
The first sentence shattered her heart.
My dearest Elena...
I don't believe you left me willingly.
She covered her mouth to stop herself from crying aloud.
For eight months...
She had believed Julian hated her.
For eight months...
Julian had believed she abandoned him.
Someone had carefully poisoned both sides with lies.
As she continued reading...
A small folded ultrasound image slipped from the envelope.
She froze.
She had never seen it before.
Written across the back, in Julian's handwriting, were seven simple words.
I already loved our baby before seeing this.
Elena broke down completely.
All this time...
He had never stopped loving either of them.
Just then—
A loud metallic clang echoed outside the hidden room.
Sofia's face turned white.
"They found us."
Heavy footsteps approached the steel door.
Someone on the other side slowly tested the handle.
Once.
Twice.
Then a calm female voice echoed through the concrete chamber.
"Elena..."
It was Isabella Moretti.
"I know you're in there."
A long silence followed.
Then Isabella spoke again.
"I suggest you open the door."
May you like
"Because if I have to open it myself..."
"...your husband dies first."
