Chapter 15 – The Ledger That Changed Everything

The chamber went completely silent.

Even the gunfire outside seemed distant.

Every eye locked onto the weathered leather notebook in Gabriel Rossi's trembling hand.

Thirty years.

He had hidden it for thirty years.

Julian stared at the old man.

"My grandfather..."

"...you're alive."

Gabriel smiled sadly.

"I wanted to meet my grandson under better circumstances."

Julian felt as if the ground beneath him had disappeared.

His father had mourned Gabriel his entire life.

Every member of the Rossi family believed he had died in a boating accident three decades earlier.

Now...

He stood only twenty feet away.

Alive.

And carrying the one object everyone had been willing to kill for.

Adrian Moretti's face hardened.

"So..."

"You finally decided to come out of hiding."

Gabriel slowly nodded.

"I promised Antonio I would."

"When the final heir was born."

His eyes settled on the newborn sleeping against Julian's chest.

"He kept his promise."

"So I'll keep mine."

Adrian quietly removed a silver pistol from inside his jacket.

"No."

"You'll give me the ledger."

Gabriel chuckled.

"After thirty years..."

"You still don't understand."

"You never needed the ledger."

"You only needed people to believe you did."

Adrian frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Julian looked between them.

"Someone tell me what's happening."

Gabriel slowly opened the notebook.

Inside weren't financial records.

There were handwritten names.

Family trees.

Dates.

Medical reports.

And dozens of faded photographs.

Julian frowned.

"This isn't an accounting ledger."

Gabriel nodded.

"It never was."

"It's the original Blood Ledger."

Isabella closed her eyes.

"Oh, no..."

Julian looked at her.

"What is a Blood Ledger?"

Gabriel answered.

"Thirty years ago..."

"...Europe's most powerful families created a secret alliance."

"They believed fortunes should never leave their bloodlines."

"So they created a system."

"No marriage."

"No adoption."

"No board vote."

"Only verified descendants could inherit."

Marco stared at the pages.

"That's insane."

Gabriel sighed.

"It became worse."

"They started arranging marriages."

"Choosing children."

"Controlling births."

Elena instinctively held Julian's arm tighter.

"Our son..."

Gabriel looked at her with sympathy.

"He was born into something he never chose."

Camila suddenly laughed.

"Enough history."

She raised her rifle toward Gabriel.

"Give me the book."

The old man calmly tore out one page.

Then another.

Then another.

"What are you doing?"

Adrian shouted.

Gabriel smiled.

"Ending this."

Before anyone could react...

He struck a nearby emergency flare against the concrete.

The bright red flame ignited instantly.

He touched it to the loose pages.

Fire spread rapidly.

The ancient paper curled and blackened.

"No!"

Adrian sprinted forward.

Camila fired.

The bullet struck Gabriel high in the shoulder.

He staggered.

But he never released the burning pages.

Instead...

He tossed the entire ledger into a pool of leaking fuel beneath the damaged archive shelves.

WHOOM!

Flames erupted across the chamber.

Rows of old documents caught fire almost instantly.

Smoke billowed toward the ceiling.

The automatic suppression system failed to activate.

The destruction countdown continued.

01:14

Adrian's composure finally shattered.

"You fool!"

"Do you know what you've destroyed?"

Gabriel smiled through the pain.

"No."

"I destroyed what should have disappeared thirty years ago."

Adrian lunged toward the fire.

Trying desperately to rescue the notebook.

Too late.

The leather cover collapsed into ash.

Decades of secrets vanished before his eyes.

Suddenly...

The newborn began crying.

Not softly.

Violently.

Elena immediately reached for him.

Julian carefully placed the baby into her arms.

She gently rocked him.

"It's okay."

"Mommy's here."

The baby continued crying.

Emily slowly walked closer.

She looked curiously at the infant.

Then quietly said,

"He's looking at the bird."

Everyone frowned.

"What bird?"

Emily pointed toward an old bronze eagle mounted high on the archive wall.

Unlike every other decoration...

It hadn't burned.

Gabriel's expression changed.

"The eagle..."

"I completely forgot."

Julian followed Emily's finger.

The eagle's glass eyes reflected the firelight strangely.

Almost like...

A lens.

Marco immediately understood.

"Boss."

"That's not a decoration."

"It's a camera."

He climbed onto a fallen archive cabinet.

Carefully removed the bronze eagle.

Inside...

Hidden behind the metal housing...

Was a miniature hard drive.

Gabriel laughed weakly.

"Antonio..."

"You brilliant man."

Julian looked at him.

"My father?"

Gabriel nodded.

"He never trusted the ledger."

"So he hid the truth somewhere nobody would ever search."

Marco inserted the tiny drive into his tactical tablet.

A single folder appeared.

ORIGINAL RECORDINGS

Over three hundred video files.

Every secret meeting.

Every illegal agreement.

Every murder.

Every betrayal.

Recorded in full.

Including...

The real killer.

Adrian's face turned white.

"No..."

He whispered.

"You weren't supposed to find that."

The countdown reached:

00:47

The ceiling groaned.

Concrete cracked overhead.

Marco looked up.

"The whole structure's coming down!"

Julian grabbed Elena's hand.

"We're leaving."

Gabriel shook his head.

"You can't."

Julian frowned.

"What?"

"The only exit..."

"...collapsed during the first explosion."

Silence.

Then Isabella stepped forward.

"There is another way."

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed toward a thick steel blast door hidden behind the burning archives.

"It leads directly to the cliff overlooking the sea."

Marco ran to inspect it.

His expression fell.

"It's sealed."

"No keypad."

"No handle."

"No hinges."

Julian looked at Isabella.

"How do we open it?"

She slowly turned toward the newborn sleeping in Elena's arms.

Tears filled her eyes.

"It wasn't built to recognize fingerprints..."

"It recognizes blood."

Julian's pulse quickened.

"The baby's?"

She nodded.

"The final heir..."

"...is the only person alive who can unlock it."

Before anyone could move toward the door—

A loud metallic click echoed through the chamber.

Adrian smiled.

Despite the fire.

Despite the collapsing ceiling.

Despite losing the ledger.

He was smiling.

Julian's instincts screamed.

"What did you do?"

Adrian slowly held up a small black detonator.

"I always prepare for failure."

He pressed the safety cover open.

A red light began flashing.

"There won't be anything left to inherit."

The digital timer on the detonator displayed:

00:30

And beneath their feet...

The first hidden explosives detonated.
