Chapter 4 – The Lockdown

The red emergency lights painted the marble lobby in the color of fresh blood.
Guests froze where they stood.
Champagne glasses slipped from trembling hands and shattered across the polished onyx floor.
The hotel's soothing background music had been replaced by the mechanical voice echoing through hidden speakers.
"Security lockdown remains in effect."
"Please stay where you are."
Julian didn't.
The instant he saw the three armed men sprint toward the service corridor, every instinct inside him roared to life.
"Marco," he barked into his phone as he ran, "I'm going after Elena."
"Boss, wait! My team is six minutes away!"
"I don't have six minutes."
He ended the call.
Behind him, Camila shouted his name.
"Julian!"
He never looked back.
Inside the employee corridor, Elena heard the heavy footsteps before she saw them.
Richard Mercer turned pale.
"They're early."
"What?" Elena whispered.
"They weren't supposed to move until midnight."
Another alarm echoed through the hallway.
Mercer grabbed her wrist.
"Come with me."
Elena pulled free.
"No."
"You'll die if you stay."
She stared into his eyes.
"For eight months you never cared whether I lived."
Mercer's jaw tightened.
"I wasn't the one making the decisions."
Before Elena could answer, the first armed man rounded the corner.
Black tactical uniform.
Face covered.
Rifle slung across his chest.
Without hesitation, Mercer shoved Elena behind a linen cart.
"Don't move."
The gunman stopped several feet away.
"Where is she?"
Mercer kept his voice calm.
"Housekeeping is evacuating."
The man raised a tablet displaying Elena's photograph.
"This woman."
Mercer shrugged.
"Haven't seen her."
The gunman's finger tightened around the trigger.
"I wasn't asking."
Julian reached the service corridor just in time to hear shouting.
He ducked behind a marble column.
Three armed men.
Mercer.
And somewhere ahead...
Elena.
Julian scanned the hallway with the eyes of a businessman who had spent years hiring elite security for hostile regions.
Professional formation.
Military discipline.
Suppressed weapons.
These weren't ordinary hotel guards.
Someone had brought in a private tactical unit.
One of the gunmen spoke into his earpiece.
"Target hasn't been secured."
A distorted voice answered through the radio.
"Alive."
"She is more valuable alive."
Julian's eyes narrowed.
Valuable?
Not dangerous.
Not guilty.
Valuable.
That changed everything.
Hidden behind the linen cart, Elena slowly reached into her pocket.
The tiny silver key the elderly cleaner had given her.
She finally understood.
There had always been an escape plan.
She just hadn't known where.
Her fingers found a small maintenance panel built into the wall.
The key fit perfectly.
A quiet click.
The narrow door opened just enough for one person to crawl through.
She looked back once.
Toward the hallway.
Toward the direction Julian had come from.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
Then she disappeared into the hidden passage.
Richard Mercer watched her vanish.
Relief flashed across his face.
Too late.
One of the gunmen had noticed the moving panel.
"There!"
Mercer reacted without thinking.
He slammed a heavy housekeeping cart sideways.
It crashed into the gunman, sending him sprawling across the tile.
"Run!" Mercer shouted toward the hidden passage.
The other two gunmen immediately opened fire.
Silenced shots cracked through the corridor.
Mercer staggered backward.
A dark stain spread across his white dress shirt.
He had been hit.
The sound reached Julian.
His heart nearly stopped.
Without another thought, he rushed into the hallway.
One gunman spun toward him.
"Stop!"
Julian grabbed a stainless-steel service trolley and drove it forward with all his strength.
The loaded cart slammed into the attacker, throwing him violently into the wall.
The rifle clattered across the floor.
The remaining gunmen instantly redirected their attention.
"New target!"
Bullets shattered mirrors and exploded ceramic tiles.
Julian dove behind an overturned cart as debris rained over him.
He caught a glimpse of Mercer lying on the floor, blood soaking his shirt.
Their eyes met.
Mercer struggled to breathe.
"They..."
He coughed violently.
"They're not..."
Blood filled his mouth.
Julian crawled toward him.
"Who?"
Mercer grabbed Julian's jacket with surprising strength.
"They're not after your company..."
Julian leaned closer.
"What are they after?"
Mercer's lips trembled.
"The baby..."
Julian froze.
"What about the baby?"
Mercer's face turned ghostly pale.
He forced out four final words.
"She isn't carrying..."
A gunshot echoed through the corridor.
Mercer's body jerked once.
His hand slipped from Julian's jacket.
His eyes became still.
He was dead.
Julian stared at him in disbelief.
The sentence remained unfinished.
She isn't carrying...
Not carrying what?
Not carrying whose child?
Before he could process the words, a slow clap echoed from the darkness at the end of the hallway.
One.
Two.
Three.
A tall woman stepped into the red emergency light.
She wore an elegant black suit and white gloves.
Silver streaks ran through her dark hair.
Despite the chaos surrounding her, she smiled as if she had just entered a formal dinner party.
The armed men immediately lowered their weapons.
Every one of them.
One by one.
They bowed their heads.
"Good evening, Mrs. Moretti."
Julian's blood ran cold.
The invisible owner of the Grand Alcazar...
The woman who officially did not exist...
Had finally revealed herself.
She looked directly at Julian and smiled with unsettling warmth.
May you like
"Mr. Rossi," she said softly.
"I've been waiting eight months to meet you."
