Chapter 7 - THE CAMERA MARGARET FORGOT

The main staircase camera had been disabled seventeen minutes before Emma fell.

The control request came from Vanessa’s phone.

She claimed the system malfunctioned.

The smart-home company produced a remote log showing a manual shutdown.

For two days, police believed the visual proof was gone.

Then an engineer found a secondary archive.

Thomas Ashford had installed it years earlier after discovering someone deleted footage from his study.

The backup operated independently.

It saved short clips whenever sound levels exceeded a set threshold.

Vanessa’s shouting activated it.

The recovered video began twelve seconds before the shove.

Emma stood near the top landing.

Vanessa blocked the hallway.

Rosa remained near the banister.

Margaret watched from below.

Emma held the unsigned medical proxy.

“I will not sign.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You married into this family.”

“You do not get to decide what belongs to us.”

“My body does not belong to you.”

“The baby is an Ashford.”

“The baby is a person.”

Margaret spoke from below.

“Emma, stop provoking her.”

Vanessa looked toward her mother.

Margaret gave the smallest nod.

Then Vanessa placed both hands against Emma’s shoulders.

She pushed.

There was no struggle.

No attack.

No confusion.

Emma disappeared down the staircase.

Rosa screamed.

Vanessa immediately grabbed her.

Margaret walked toward the bottom step and looked at Emma’s body.

For three seconds, she did nothing.

Then she said:

“Remember the plan.”

Vanessa began crying.

The recording showed everything.

Detective Ruiz played it during Vanessa’s second interview.

Her attorney requested a break.

Vanessa continued watching.

The image froze on her hands against Emma’s shoulders.

Ruiz asked:

“Was that self-defense?”

Vanessa looked away.

“Emma had threatened our family.”

“With what?”

“Exposure.”

“Of financial crimes?”

“She was destroying the company.”

“So you pushed a pregnant woman down a staircase.”

“I did not mean for her to fall that far.”

The answer became an admission.

Margaret was arrested for conspiracy and evidence tampering.

Vanessa was charged with attempted murder.

Officers placed them in separate vehicles outside the mansion.

Reporters lined the gates.

Margaret looked toward Ethan.

“Stop this.”

He remained beside Emma’s attorney.

“I cannot stop evidence.”

“You control the company.”

“Not anymore.”

“You are my son.”

“I am also the husband of the woman you watched fall.”

Margaret’s expression became colder.

“She has turned you against your blood.”

Ethan answered:

May you like

“No.”

“She showed me what my blood was willing to do.”
