Chapter 6 - ETHAN’S SIGNATURE
Ethan’s private email account contained a document he had signed six months earlier.
The title read:
Emergency Family Continuity Authorization.
Margaret presented it during a late-night board meeting.
She said it allowed the company to operate if Emma went into labor during a corporate emergency.
Ethan read only the summary.
He signed electronically.
The full document granted Margaret authority to classify Emma as medically unavailable.
It also allowed Vanessa to act as family representative during any guardianship dispute.
Ethan had signed part of the machinery designed to remove his wife.
He sat inside the hospital chapel alone.
The signed page glowed on his phone.
Emma found him there after a nurse helped her into a wheelchair.
Her wrist was in a cast.
One hand rested protectively on her belly.
Ethan stood immediately.
“You should be in bed.”
“I wanted to see the document.”
He gave her the phone.
She read the authorization.
“You signed this.”
“Yes.”
“Did you read it?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“My mother said it was routine.”
Emma returned the phone.
“That answer has protected your family for years.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
Her voice remained calm.
“You told me Vanessa was dramatic.”
“You told me Margaret was traditional.”
“You told me Dr. Reeves was respected.”
“Each time I asked for an independent opinion, you said it would insult them.”
Ethan looked toward the chapel floor.
“I wanted peace.”
“You wanted me to absorb the cost of it.”
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
The honesty did not repair anything.
It created the first solid ground between them.
Emma continued.
“I do not know whether I can remain married to you.”
His face changed.
He did not ask her to reconsider.
“You should not decide while you are trapped in a hospital.”
“I agree.”
“I am moving somewhere else after discharge.”
“I will arrange anything you need.”
“No.”
“Rachel will.”
Rachel Morgan was Emma’s closest friend and an attorney.
Margaret had called her vulgar and ambitious.
Ethan had gradually stopped inviting her to the mansion.
Now Emma understood why.
“I am not allowing another Ashford to arrange my safety.”
Ethan nodded.
“What do you want from me?”
“Give the police everything.”
“No family lawyer.”
“No private cleanup.”
“No deal made to protect the company name.”
“I will.”
“If the truth harms Ashford Medical, let it.”
He swallowed.
“I will.”
Ethan resigned as chief executive the following morning.
The board resisted.
Margaret’s allies called it an emotional reaction.
He released a public statement.
“My wife was harmed inside my family home after I ignored repeated warnings.”
“I signed documents I did not read.”
“I allowed family loyalty to replace oversight.”
“I will not lead a medical company while avoiding accountability in my own house.”
The stock price fell.
Reporters surrounded the hospital.
Margaret called Ethan’s statement a betrayal.
