Chapter 3 - ROSA’S FIRST LIE

Rosa Alvarez sat inside the mansion library with her hands clenched together.

Detective Ruiz placed a recorder on the table.

“You witnessed the incident.”

Rosa shook her head.

“I was carrying towels.”

“I heard shouting.”

“When I turned, Mrs. Emma was already falling.”

Ruiz watched her carefully.

“Vanessa said Emma attacked her.”

“I do not know.”

“You were standing less than six feet away.”

Rosa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I looked down.”

“Why?”

She did not answer.

Ruiz slid a photograph across the table.

It showed bruising around Rosa’s upper arm.

The marks matched the position of Vanessa’s fingers when she grabbed her.

“Did Vanessa threaten you?”

“No.”

“Did Margaret?”

“No.”

“Did anyone threaten your immigration status?”

Rosa’s breathing changed.

Her younger sister, Daniela, had recently arrived in the United States on a temporary work visa.

Margaret’s foundation sponsored the position.

The Ashfords controlled Daniela’s employment.

And possibly her right to remain in the country.

Ruiz leaned forward.

“I spoke to federal immigration counsel.”

“Margaret cannot cancel your sister’s lawful status because you tell the truth.”

“She says she can.”

“She is lying.”

Rosa looked toward the closed library doors.

“They always know where Daniela is.”

“Who is they?”

“Mrs. Margaret.”

“Miss Vanessa.”

“Mr. Charles.”

Ruiz turned off the recorder.

“This conversation can pause.”

“But Emma and her baby are in the hospital.”

“If you saw what happened, she needs someone to say it.”

Rosa covered her face.

“She pushed her.”

Ruiz waited.

“Say the name.”

“Vanessa pushed Mrs. Emma.”

“How?”

“They were arguing near the stairs.”

“Mrs. Emma said she would not sign the medical proxy.”

“Miss Vanessa moved close.”

“She said the baby would belong to the Ashfords whether Emma accepted it or not.”

“Then she pushed with both hands.”

“Did Emma touch Vanessa first?”

“No.”

“Did Emma threaten her?”

“No.”

“Why did Vanessa grab you?”

“She told me to cry.”

Ruiz’s expression hardened.

“She said if I told police the truth, Daniela would be arrested and sent away.”

“Did Margaret hear that?”

“Yes.”

“What did Margaret do?”

“Nothing.”

Rosa wiped her face.

“Then Mrs. Margaret told everyone Emma had become violent.”

Ruiz restarted the recorder.

Rosa repeated every word.

When she finished, she removed a small silver pendant from beneath her uniform.

“I recorded some of it.”

Ruiz stared at the pendant.

“Emma gave this to me.”

“When?”

“Two weeks ago.”

“She said if something happened, I should press the side twice.”

The pendant contained a microphone.

Rosa had activated it moments before the argument.

The audio began with Vanessa’s voice.

“You have delayed this family long enough.”

Emma answered:

“I will not sign away control of my own medical care.”

Margaret spoke next.

“It is temporary.”

“Only until the baby is born.”

Emma replied:

“Then why does the second page give Vanessa permanent guardianship?”

A pause followed.

Vanessa’s voice became colder.

“Because Ethan cannot make difficult decisions when you are involved.”

Emma said:

“You mean he will not give you the company.”

Then the recording captured movement.

Rosa gasping.

Emma shouting:

“Do not touch me.”

Vanessa answered:

“You should have left before the baby mattered.”

A heavy sound followed.

Then Emma’s body struck the stairs.

The audio did not show the shove.

It made the lie much harder to sustain.

Ruiz stood.

“Rosa, you and your sister are going into protective housing tonight.”

She looked terrified.

“What about my job?”

“You are no longer working for people who threaten your family.”

As officers escorted Rosa from the library, Margaret appeared in the hallway.

Their eyes met.

Margaret said nothing.

She only touched the pearl necklace at her throat.

Rosa stopped walking.

“Detective.”

Ruiz turned.

Rosa pointed toward the necklace.

“That is not jewelry.”

“Mrs. Margaret records everyone with it.”

Margaret’s hand dropped.

An officer stepped toward her.

Inside the largest pearl was a miniature camera.

The matriarch who accused Emma of secretly recording the family had been filming the entire mansion for years.
