Chapter 14 - ROSA BEFORE THE GRAND JURY
Rosa entered the federal courthouse wearing a dark blue dress.
Daniela sat beside her attorney.
Both women had received protected immigration status after cooperating.
Margaret’s defense team attempted to discredit Rosa.
They called her an angry employee.
They claimed Emma paid her.
They suggested she invented the shove to remain in the country.
Rosa answered each question quietly.
“No one paid me.”
“I wanted to keep my job.”
“I lied first because I was afraid.”
“Then I told the truth because Mrs. Emma and the baby could have died.”
The attorney displayed Rosa’s first statement.
“You said you did not see the shove.”
“Yes.”
“So you are a liar.”
“Yes.”
The courtroom became silent.
Rosa continued.
“I lied when powerful people threatened my sister.”
“That is why people like Margaret threaten families.”
“They know fear can change a sentence.”
“But fear did not change what happened.”
The prosecution played the pendant recording.
Then the staircase video.
Rosa identified every voice.
Margaret’s attorney asked why Emma gave a maid a recording device.
Rosa looked toward the jury.
“Because Mrs. Emma knew the family would believe a rich woman in a green dress before a housekeeper.”
Several jurors looked toward Vanessa.
The sentence defined the entire case.
Emma did not call police after the fall because she suddenly became brave.
She called because she had already learned how thoroughly wealth could organize a lie.
Rosa’s testimony led to new charges for witness intimidation and labor exploitation.
Household staff came forward.
Margaret withheld passports.
Vanessa deducted money for imaginary damages.
Charles threatened family members abroad.
