Chapter 1 - THE CALL FROM THE MARBLE FLOOR

Emma Ashford hit the bottom of the staircase with enough force to send pain through every part of her body.

For one terrifying second, she could not breathe.

Her right shoulder struck the polished floor first.

Her hip followed.

Then the side of her pregnant belly pressed against the cold marble.

A sharp cry escaped her lips.

Both hands immediately covered the child inside her.

“Please.”

The word came out broken.

“Please let my baby be okay.”

At the top of the grand staircase, Vanessa Ashford stood in a dark green dress.

Her hands were still extended from the shove.

Her expression showed shock for less than a second.

Then calculation replaced it.

Vanessa grabbed Rosa Alvarez, the nearest housekeeper, and pulled the terrified woman against her side.

“She attacked me.”

Vanessa’s voice filled the mansion foyer.

“She tried to push me down the stairs.”

Rosa’s face turned pale.

Vanessa pointed toward Emma.

“Tell them.”

“Tell everyone what she did.”

More than a dozen members of the Ashford family stood throughout the foyer.

Margaret Ashford remained beside the fireplace with one hand resting against her pearl necklace.

Her husband’s younger brother, Charles, stood near the library doors.

Several family attorneys and board members had gathered for the afternoon trust meeting.

No one moved toward Emma.

They were all looking at Vanessa.

Waiting for her version to become official.

Emma’s husband, Ethan, rushed out of the study.

He stopped when he saw his wife on the floor.

“Emma.”

He ran toward her.

Vanessa immediately began crying.

“She lost control.”

“She came after me.”

“I only protected myself.”

Emma reached for her phone.

Every movement sent pain through her side.

Ethan knelt beside her.

“Don’t move.”

“I’m calling an ambulance.”

Emma shook her head.

She unlocked the phone with trembling fingers.

Then she called the number she had memorized three weeks earlier.

Detective Daniel Ruiz answered immediately.

“Emma?”

Her voice cracked.

“Detective.”

“Send everyone here immediately.”

The smile hidden beneath Vanessa’s tears disappeared.

Margaret stepped forward.

“What have you done?”

Emma did not answer.

Ruiz’s voice came through the speaker.

“Is the signal confirmed?”

“Yes.”

“Are you injured?”

“I fell down the main staircase.”

“Who pushed you?”

Emma looked directly at Vanessa.

“My sister-in-law.”

Rosa made a small sound.

Vanessa released her arm.

“You lying little—”

Ethan stood.

“Enough.”

His voice shook with anger and fear.

Vanessa stared at him.

“You believe her?”

“I believe she is pregnant and bleeding on the floor.”

Emma looked down.

A small dark stain had appeared along the side of her cream dress.

Panic rushed through her.

“My baby.”

Ethan removed his jacket and placed it beneath her head.

“Stay with me.”

Outside the mansion, sirens became audible.

Not one vehicle.

Several.

Police cruisers.

An ambulance.

And an unmarked evidence van.

Vanessa looked toward the front windows.

Her face turned white.

Margaret lowered her voice.

“Emma, whatever you think happened can be handled inside this family.”

Emma looked at the woman who had spent months calling her unstable, greedy, and unworthy of the Ashford name.

“No.”

“It can’t.”

The front doors opened.

Detective Ruiz entered with six officers.

Two paramedics followed him.

Behind them came a forensic photographer and a woman carrying sealed evidence bags.

Ruiz surveyed the foyer.

The overturned flower arrangement.

The scuff marks near the top stair.

The torn piece of green fabric caught on the brass railing.

Emma on the floor.

Vanessa beside Rosa.

Then he looked at Margaret.

“No one leaves.”

Margaret’s expression hardened.

“You cannot enter this house without permission.”

Ruiz removed a folded document from his coat.

“This is a search warrant.”

Vanessa took one step backward.

May you like

Ruiz noticed.

“And this staircase is now a crime scene.”
