Chapter 17 - MARGARET’S DEFINITION OF FAMILY
Margaret insisted on testifying.
She walked to the witness stand with perfect posture.
Her silver hair was carefully arranged.
She wore no pearls.
The prosecution had entered the necklace into evidence.
Margaret described decades of leadership.
Hospitals built.
Research funded.
Jobs created.
She presented herself as a woman forced to make decisions weaker people avoided.
Her attorney asked about Thomas.
“He became unstable.”
“Dr. Reeves recommended medication.”
“Did you kill him?”
“No.”
“Did you order Vanessa to push Emma?”
“No.”
“Did you intend to take Grace?”
“I intended to preserve the child’s inheritance.”
The prosecutor approached.
“By taking control from her mother?”
“Emma was not prepared for the responsibility.”
“Who decided that?”
“I did.”
“Did Emma ask for your judgment?”
“No.”
“Did Thomas ask you to change his trust?”
“He was confused.”
“Did Caleb Monroe ask to be institutionalized?”
“He required care.”
“Did Olivia Shaw’s father ask you to sell his company?”
“He was incapable.”
Every person who disagreed with Margaret became incapable.
The prosecutor displayed the pearl-camera recording.
Margaret saying:
Do not hurt the baby.
Only frighten Emma enough to make her sign.
“Were those your words?”
“Yes.”
“So you knew Vanessa planned physical intimidation.”
“I expected an argument.”
“What did you mean by do not hurt the baby?”
Margaret’s face tightened.
“I was concerned.”
“Concerned about what?”
She did not answer.
The prosecutor played the next line.
What if she falls?
Make sure Rosa sees her touch you first.
Margaret looked toward Vanessa.
The prosecutor continued.
“Why prepare a witness for self-defense before anything happened?”
Margaret stopped pretending.
Her voice became cold.
“Emma was dismantling everything my husband built.”
“Thomas built a company.”
“You built a system for stealing control.”
“I preserved the Ashford legacy.”
“From a pregnant woman?”
“From outsiders.”
Emma had been married to Ethan for four years.
Grace was Thomas’s granddaughter.
Rosa had worked in the mansion for six.

Margaret called all of them outsiders.
The prosecutor asked:
“What makes someone family?”
Margaret answered immediately.
“Blood.”
“Then why did you poison your husband?”
