Chapter 16 - EMMA’S TESTIMONY
Emma entered the courtroom without Grace.
She refused to turn her baby into an image for jurors.
Rachel remained with the child in a secure room.
Emma wore a black dress and a simple silver necklace.
Her wrist had healed.
Pain still moved through her hip during cold mornings.
She took the oath.
The prosecutor asked about the months before the fall.
Emma described the vitamins.
The confusion.
The missing documents.
The oil near the staircase.
The photograph from Elena.
The hidden trust.
Then she described the argument.
“Vanessa wanted me to sign the proxy.”
“I refused.”
“She said the child belonged to the Ashfords.”
“I told her my baby belonged to no company.”
“What happened next?”
“She pushed me.”
“Did you attack her?”
“No.”
“Did you touch her?”
“No.”
“Why did you call Detective Ruiz instead of a family member?”
Emma looked toward Margaret.
“Because the family members were already in the room.”
The prosecutor asked about the recording plan.
Emma explained the pendant.
The purse recorder.
The prearranged signal.
Send everyone.
She had contacted Ruiz after discovering the sedatives.
He advised her not to confront anyone alone.
The family called the trust meeting before police could arrange protection.
Emma attended because the guardianship documents required her immediate response.
Margaret’s attorney approached.
“You chose to enter a tense family meeting while pregnant.”
“Yes.”
“You secretly recorded people.”
“Yes.”
“You distrusted your husband.”
“I distrusted the people he trusted.”
“Did you hope to remove Margaret from the company?”
“I hoped to prevent her from stealing my child’s rights.”
The attorney displayed messages where Emma called Vanessa dangerous.
“You had decided she was guilty before the staircase.”
“I had decided she was dangerous after someone placed oil on the stairs and my vitamins contained sedatives.”
“You wanted a confrontation.”
“No.”
“I wanted evidence.”
“Isn’t that the same thing?”
Emma looked toward the jury.
“No.”
“Evidence records what someone chooses to do.”
“It does not make the choice for them.”
The attorney asked whether Emma still loved Ethan.
The prosecutor objected.
The judge allowed a limited answer.
Emma remained quiet for several seconds.
“Yes.”
Margaret’s attorney smiled.
Emma continued.
“Love did not make him safe when he refused to listen.”
“It does not make his mother innocent.”
