The jury deliberated for three days.
Emma waited at Rachel’s home with Grace.
The baby slept against her chest.
Ethan stayed in a nearby hotel.
He did not assume he belonged inside Emma’s safe space.
Detective Ruiz called at 2:36 p.m.
Margaret was guilty of murder.
Conspiracy.
Financial exploitation.
Medical fraud.
Witness intimidation.
And attempted unlawful guardianship.
Vanessa was guilty of attempted murder.
Conspiracy.
Assault.
Fraud.
Kidnapping conspiracy.
And evidence tampering.
Charles received a reduced sentence under his agreement.
Dr. Reeves was sentenced separately.
Victor Sloane lost his law license and received twenty years.
Judge Hale was convicted of bribery and obstruction.
Calvin Ross received eight years.
The Ashford Foundation was dissolved.
At sentencing, Vanessa looked toward Emma.
“You took everything.”
Emma answered quietly.
“No.”
“You threw it away.”
Vanessa turned toward Ethan.
“You chose her.”
Ethan did not move.
“I chose the truth after choosing comfort for too long.”
Margaret received life imprisonment.
Vanessa received thirty-two years.
Before officers led Margaret away, she looked at Grace’s empty seat.
“That child will inherit ruins.”
Emma stood.
“She will inherit choices.”
That was the difference Margaret never understood.
