Chapter 10 - THE HOUSEKEEPER ON THE PLANE

Canadian authorities stopped the medical aircraft before it left the runway in Toronto.
Elena Torres was found unconscious inside.
Her hands were restrained beneath a blanket.
The flight documents described her as a psychiatric patient being transferred voluntarily.
Charles Ashford sat beside her wearing a physician’s coat.
He was not a doctor.
He carried forged credentials.
Police arrested him.
Elena regained consciousness in a hospital.
She had disappeared one month earlier after witnessing Vanessa pour oil near the upper landing.
Margaret offered her money.
Elena refused.
Charles threatened her son, who worked at an Ashford warehouse.
She attempted to contact Emma.
Before she could reach police, two men forced her into a vehicle.
She had been held inside a vacant house owned by the foundation.
Margaret’s employees brought food.
Dr. Reeves provided medication.
Charles questioned her repeatedly.
He wanted the photograph deleted.
Elena had already sent it to Emma through an encrypted account.
She refused to reveal the password.
The family planned to move her permanently.
The Toronto flight was not an emergency response.
It had been scheduled before the staircase shove.
They expected Emma’s investigation to lead police toward Elena.
Charles intended to make the witness disappear before that happened.
Elena returned to the United States under protection.
Her statement connected Margaret, Vanessa, Charles, Reeves, and Victor Sloane.
She also revealed Thomas Ashford’s final secret.
Years earlier, Thomas hired her mother as a private caregiver.
During his last week, Thomas stopped eating food prepared inside the mansion.
He believed Margaret was drugging him.
He gave Elena’s mother a sealed box.
The box had been hidden inside a church storage room for five years.
Police recovered it.
Inside was a video recorded by Thomas.
He looked weak.
His hands trembled.
But his mind was clear.
“If you are watching this, Margaret has convinced everyone that I am confused.”
“I am not.”
“She and Vanessa are moving money through the foundation.”
“Victor changed my trust.”
“Malcolm Reeves has altered my medication.”
Thomas paused.
“My son will want to protect his mother.”
“That is his greatest weakness.”
“He mistakes refusing conflict for kindness.”
Ethan watched the recording beside Emma.
His father continued.
“If Emma has entered his life by the time this is found, tell her I am sorry.”
“She will inherit a war she did not start.”
“And if there is a child, protect the mother’s right to choose.”
“No Ashford name is more important than that.”
The video ended.
Ethan covered his face.
Emma sat beside him but did not reach for him.
After several seconds, he looked at her.
“My father knew me better than I knew myself.”
“He also gave you a chance to change.”
“I almost found this too late.”
“Yes.”
The baby moved beneath Emma’s hand.
May you like
She looked down.
“We did not find it too late.”
