Chapter 8 - THE WEDDING GUEST LIST
Sophia’s laptop contained a complete wedding guest list.
Politicians.
Investors.
Military contractors.
Foreign executives.
The ceremony had been designed as more than a marriage.
It was a transfer of influence.
After the vows, Ethan planned to announce a merger between Bennett Aerospace and Hale Defense Systems.
He believed Hale Defense belonged to Sophia’s family.
In truth, the company was almost bankrupt.
Sophia needed Bennett’s patents and contracts.
The merger documents transferred several technologies into a new entity controlled by Grant Hale.
Ethan’s signature appeared on early drafts.
He had approved discussion.
He had not approved transfer.
The final pages were forged.
Sophia planned to sign them after the wedding using the authority created by the false prenuptial agreement.
If Ethan died in the test-flight accident, she would control the merged company.
The twins’ trust would become a minority interest.
Nathan reviewed the contracts.
“She was not marrying you.”
“She was acquiring the company.”
Ethan looked toward Laura’s original operating agreement.
Laura had protected the twins with layers of oversight.
Sophia spent two years cutting through each one.
“She needed me emotionally compromised.”
Nathan nodded.
“She chose a grieving widower.”
Ethan stood near the window.
“I chose her too.”
“Do not turn her planning into your vanity.”
“I ignored warning signs.”
“Yes.”
Nathan’s voice remained hard.
“But blaming yourself for everything can become another way to avoid the specific work of repairing it.”
Ethan looked at him.
“What work?”
“Learn your daughters.”
“Not the version reported by assistants.”
“Not school summaries.”
“Not what Sophia said.”
“Learn what frightens them.”
“What makes them laugh.”
“Which twin hates bananas.”
Ethan almost smiled.
“Chloe.”
“No.”
“Ava hates bananas.”
Ethan’s face fell.
Nathan had made his point.
The canceled wedding date arrived on Friday.
Hawthorne Chapel remained decorated.
White roses filled the aisle.
Guests had not yet been formally notified because police feared co-conspirators would flee.
Ethan decided to use the gathering.
He entered the chapel alone.
Ava and Chloe remained safely at home with Nathan and security.
Sophia’s relatives filled the front rows.
Investors whispered.
Sophia’s attorney expected Ethan to announce a postponement.
Instead, Ethan stood at the altar.
“This wedding will not occur.”
Gasps moved through the chapel.
He continued.
“The proposed merger is canceled.”
“Hale Defense is under federal investigation.”
“And every person who participated in fraud against my daughters’ trust will be identified.”
Several guests rose.
Federal agents entered through the rear doors.
Three executives were arrested.
Two attempted to leave through the sacristy.
One of them carried altered trust documents inside his jacket.
The wedding had become a trap.
Sophia watched from a secure video feed in county custody.
She saw the agents.
The frightened guests.
The empty place where she expected to stand.
Then she saw Ava and Chloe appear on the chapel’s large screen.
They had recorded one sentence.
