She disliked public attention.

At seventeen, Chloe applied to culinary programs.

The white marble kitchen had been the location of her worst memory.

“I used to think kitchens belonged to people giving orders,” she said.
“I want to make one where people feel safe.”
She trained at a community restaurant that hired survivors of domestic abuse.
On her first day, a manager shouted at a dishwasher.

“What do you need?”
“A ride home.”

He drove her.
A week later, the restaurant’s director investigated.
The manager was removed.
Chloe returned only after the staff approved the change.

At eighteen, she opened a small weekend bakery inside the mansion’s former servants’ dining room.
She called it Laura’s Table.
Every employee shared tips equally.
No worker ate after the guests.
