Chapter 16 - AVA SPOKE AT THE SCHOOL
At sixteen, Ava joined a student committee on emotional abuse.
She had never discussed Sophia publicly.
The school invited her to speak after another student reported mistreatment by a coach.
Ava asked Ethan whether she should accept.
“What do you want?”
“I want other kids to know adults can look nice in public.”
“Then say that.”
“What if people only remember me as the girl who was slapped?”
“They may.”
“Do you still want to speak?”
Ava thought for a week.
Then she stood inside the school auditorium.
Chloe sat in the front row.
Ethan and Nathan remained near the back.
Ava did not describe every detail.
She spoke about patterns.
“Abuse did not begin with a slap.”
“It began when someone told me my feelings created problems.”
“It grew when adults accepted reports about me without asking me.”
“It became powerful when every attempt to speak was interrupted.”
She looked toward the students.
“If a child changes suddenly, ask what changed around them.”
“Do not only ask what is wrong with them.”
“Fear can look like rudeness.”
“Silence can look like obedience.”
“And a beautiful home can still be unsafe.”
Afterward, students lined up to speak with counselors.
Three reports were made that day.
One involved a parent.
One involved a teacher.
One involved an older sibling.
Ava came home exhausted.
“Did I do the right thing?”
Ethan looked at her.
“Three people asked for help.”
“That does not make you responsible for saving all of them.”
“But your voice opened a door.”
Ava smiled.
“Mom liked open doors.”
“Yes.”
“She also liked locking the pantry because Nathan stole cookies.”
