Chapter 4 - THE AIRCRAFT

Bennett Aerospace was preparing to test a new private jet.
Ethan planned to join the demonstration flight.
Sophia had encouraged him.
She called it a symbolic first trip after their wedding.
The aircraft had completed months of inspections.
Yet the company’s security team discovered a maintenance request submitted through Sophia’s office.
It authorized an outside technician to access the flight-control system.
The request carried Ethan’s digital approval.
He had never seen it.
The technician was named Cole Ramsey.
He had no active aerospace license.
He also had a criminal record for industrial sabotage.
Police found his apartment empty.
His bank account contained a two-million-dollar payment from a shell company.
The shell company belonged to Sophia’s brother, Grant Hale.
Sophia’s family had lost most of its fortune years earlier.
She maintained the appearance of wealth through loans, rented jewelry, and carefully staged charity photographs.
Marrying Ethan would restore everything.
Killing him after marriage would make her one of the richest widows in America.
The twins complicated the plan.
Their trust controlled the company.
If they remained in the mansion under Sophia’s care, she could influence them.
If they were sent overseas, no one would hear them object.
Ethan sat inside the estate library while Detective Ruiz explained the evidence.
Ava and Chloe were asleep upstairs.
Mrs. Bell remained outside their door.
“How long has Sophia been planning this?”
“At least nine months.”
“We have messages from before your engagement.”
Ethan looked at Laura’s portrait above the fireplace.
“Why did I not see it?”
“Because people who plan carefully show different faces in different rooms.”
Ruiz did not excuse him.
She did not need to.
Ethan had trusted convenience.
His daughters paid for it.
The front doors opened shortly after dawn.
Nathan Bennett entered with a travel bag and no coat.
He walked directly toward Ethan.
Then he struck him.
The blow turned Ethan’s head.
Ruiz moved between them.
Nathan’s hands shook.
“My sister left those girls with you.”
“I know.”
“You brought a stranger into their home.”
“I know.”
“You let her isolate them.”
“I know.”
Nathan stared at him.
Ethan did not defend himself.
That stopped the second blow.
Nathan looked toward the staircase.
“Where are they?”
“Sleeping.”
“Are they safe?”
“For now.”
Nathan’s anger broke into grief.
“For now is not enough.”
“No.”
Ethan touched his jaw.
“It isn’t.”
The twins appeared at the top of the stairs.
Ava called Nathan’s name.
He crossed the foyer before she reached the final step.
Both girls entered his arms.
For the first time since Ethan found them in the kitchen, they cried loudly.
Not the silent tears Sophia had trained them to hide.
Nathan held them.
Ethan stood several feet away.
He wanted to join them.
He did not assume he had the right.
Chloe looked toward him.
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“Are you mad at us?”
The question struck everyone.
Ethan moved closer.
“No.”
“Never for telling the truth.”
“But we didn’t tell.”
May you like
Ava wiped her face.
“We thought you would marry her anyway.”
