Chapter 15 - ETHAN LEFT THE COMPANY
Two years after the trial, Ethan resigned as chief executive of Bennett Aerospace.
The board resisted.
The company was stable.
Profits were rising.
Investors trusted him.
That was exactly why he left at that moment.
He did not want the decision mistaken for collapse.
He remained chairman.
A professional executive took daily control.
Ethan attended school concerts.
Therapy appointments.
Ordinary breakfasts.
He learned Ava hated bananas.
He learned Chloe loved them.
Nathan reminded him of the mistake with great satisfaction.
The twins were fourteen when Ethan missed his first scheduled board call to attend Ava’s piano recital.
The company survived.
He turned off his phone before entering the auditorium.
Ava noticed.
Afterward, she asked whether the meeting was important.
“Yes.”
“More important than this?”
“It involved hundreds of employees.”
She looked worried.
“Then you should have gone.”
Ethan shook his head.
“Leadership means building a company that does not collapse because one man attends his daughter’s recital.”
Ava considered that.
“Did Mom teach you that?”
“Your mother tried.”
“I learned late.”
The family began visiting Laura’s grave together.
For years, Ethan went alone.
He thought grief was private.
The twins thought he did not want them there.
Now they brought flowers.
Sometimes they talked.
Sometimes they sat in silence.
Chloe once asked whether Laura would be angry that Ethan loved Sophia.
Ethan answered carefully.
“Your mother would be angry that I ignored evidence.”
“She would not be angry that I wanted companionship.”
“Love after loss was not the betrayal.”
“Failing to protect you was.”
The distinction helped all three of them.
Laura did not need to become a saint guarding Ethan from future life.
Sophia did not need to own every memory after Laura.
