Chapter 1 - THE DOOR CLOSED BEHIND HER

Sophia remained on the marble floor for three stunned seconds.

One hand covered her cheek.

The other pressed against the diamond necklace Ethan had given her only six weeks earlier.

She had expected fear.

She had expected an apology.

She had expected Ethan to remember the wedding invitations, the guests, the contracts, and the social scandal that would follow if he threw her out.

Instead, he pointed toward the kitchen doors.

“Leave.”

His voice was low.

It was more frightening than a shout.

Sophia slowly rose.

“You hit me.”

Ethan looked at the twins trembling against his chest.

Ava’s cheek was red.

Chloe’s wrists carried faint marks from the stiff cuffs of the maid uniform.

“I should not have struck you.”

He did not look away.

“But you will not use my mistake to hide what you did to my daughters.”

Sophia’s expression hardened.

“They needed discipline.”

“They needed a father who came home sooner.”

Ethan removed his suit jacket and wrapped it around Ava’s shoulders.

Then he looked at the head housekeeper standing near the pantry.

“Mrs. Bell, call the police.”

Sophia laughed.

“You are going to have me arrested over one slap?”

Ethan’s face changed.

“One slap is what I witnessed.”

“What else happened while I was gone?”

The kitchen staff lowered their eyes.

No one answered.

That silence told Ethan more than words.

Sophia reached for her purse.

“You are confused.”

“The girls have been manipulating you ever since their mother died.”

Ava flinched.

Ethan noticed.

He stood.

“Do not mention Laura again.”

Sophia took one step backward.

Laura Bennett had been Ethan’s wife for fourteen years.

She died in a boating accident two summers earlier.

Since then, Ethan had tried to become both parents while running Bennett Aerospace, the company his wife’s family had founded.

Sophia entered his life during the worst year.

She was elegant.

Patient.

Attentive.

She volunteered at the twins’ school.

She remembered Laura’s birthday.

She told Ethan that loving again did not mean forgetting.

Now he wondered how much of that woman had ever existed.

A security guard appeared at the kitchen entrance.

Sophia lifted her chin.

“You cannot remove me from my own future home.”

Ethan looked around the white marble kitchen.

“This house belongs to Ava and Chloe’s trust.”

“It never belonged to you.”

Sophia froze.

Ethan continued.

“The wedding is canceled.”

“The engagement is over.”

“And if you ever approach my daughters again, you will answer to more than me.”

Police sirens sounded beyond the estate gates.

Sophia’s confidence cracked.

Only for a moment.

Then she smiled.

“You think this ends because you opened one door?”

She lifted her purse.

“You have no idea what your daughters have already signed.”

Ethan turned toward the twins.

Ava’s face emptied of color.

Chloe began crying again.

“What did she make you sign?” Ethan asked.

Neither child answered.

Sophia walked toward the hallway.

As the guard escorted her away, she looked back.

May you like

“The wedding may be over.”

“But by tomorrow morning, this house will still belong to me.”
