The mansion changed after the trial.
Ethan did not sell it immediately.
The twins wanted time.
They restored Laura’s photographs.
They returned color to their bedrooms.
The white kitchen remained.
Ava hated it.
Chloe wanted to paint the island yellow.
Ethan allowed them to choose.
They painted it themselves during summer vacation.
The result was uneven.
Several cabinet handles were stained.
Ethan refused to correct it.
The maid uniforms were preserved as evidence.
After trial, the girls decided to destroy them.
They placed the fabric inside a metal container in the garden.
Nathan supervised the fire.
Ava watched the black skirts burn.
Chloe threw the stiff collars in last.
“No more costumes,” she said.
Mrs. Bell remained head housekeeper.

“Because wealthy households often confuse privacy with permission.”
The doors inside the mansion also changed.
No bedroom could be locked from the outside.
The linen room became an art studio.
Chloe painted over the door herself.
Ava chose to keep one of Sophia’s diamonds recovered from the evidence.
Not as jewelry.
She placed it inside a sealed display beside a piece of yellow-painted wood.
The plaque read:
EXPENSIVE DOES NOT MEAN GOOD.
The twins began inviting friends home again.
At first, loud laughter made them nervous.
Then it became ordinary.
One afternoon, Ethan heard a glass break in the kitchen.
He entered and found Chloe standing near the pieces.
Her face was white.
“I’m sorry.”
Ethan looked at the glass.
Then at her.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Then we clean it.”
Chloe stared.
“That’s all?”
“That’s all.”
She began crying.
Ethan understood the tears were not about the glass.
He helped her gather the pieces.
No one shouted.
No one withheld dinner.
