Sophia met Laura only once publicly.
They served together on a museum committee.
Sophia later told Ethan they had barely spoken.
That was a lie.
Recovered emails showed months of private communication.
Laura had discovered financial irregularities inside Bennett Aerospace.
Payments were moving through a consulting company controlled by Sophia and Grant Hale.
At the time, Sophia worked for one of Bennett’s suppliers.
Laura planned to terminate the contract and report the fraud.
Two days later, she died.
The boating report said Laura fell overboard during a storm.
Her body was recovered near the north shore.
The boat’s emergency rail had failed.
Investigators blamed corrosion.
New photographs showed fresh cuts around the rail bolts.
The boat mechanic remembered a woman collecting the vessel on Laura’s behalf.
Sophia.
She claimed she delivered charity documents.
No one connected her to the accident because she entered Ethan’s life officially a year later.
Detective Ruiz reopened the case.
Nathan sat beside Ethan as they watched marina footage.
Sophia walked along the dock wearing a red raincoat.
She boarded Laura’s boat.
She remained inside for eleven minutes.
The next camera failed to record.
The following morning, Laura died.
“She killed my sister,” Nathan whispered.
“We do not know yet,” Ruiz said.
Ethan stared at Sophia’s face on the screen.
A woman who later comforted him through grief.
A woman who helped organize Laura’s memorial fundraiser.
A woman who told the twins that their mother wanted Ethan to love again.
Sophia had not entered a grieving family by accident.
She created the opening.
A forensic examination of the boat revealed a second detail.
The emergency radio had been disabled.
Laura tried to call Ethan at 3:14 that afternoon.
His phone showed no record.
Sophia had already gained access to Bennett Aerospace’s communication network through the supplier contract.
A server log revealed the call was redirected.
The recipient listened for seventeen seconds.
Then deleted it.
The employee identification belonged to Grant Hale.
Nathan stood.
“I’m going to kill him.”
Ruiz blocked the door.
“No.”
“He listened to her die.”
“And if you attack him, you weaken the case.”
Nathan’s face twisted with rage.
Ethan understood.
He had struck Sophia in the kitchen.
For one instant, anger had controlled him.
He regretted it.
Not because she deserved protection from consequence.
Because violence gave her a weapon to use against the truth.
“We do this legally,” Ethan said.
Nathan turned.
“You already failed them legally.”
“Yes.”
Ethan did not look away.
“That is why I will not fail them again emotionally.”
Grant Hale was arrested at a private airfield.
He carried a passport and two million dollars in bearer bonds.
Cole Ramsey was arrested inside the same hangar.
The aircraft sabotage had been scheduled.
The plan was real.
Grant agreed to cooperate after prosecutors presented the marina records.
He claimed Sophia planned everything.
