Chapter 13 - THE VERDICT
The jury deliberated for twenty-one hours.
Sophia was found guilty of Laura’s murder.
She was found guilty of child abuse, conspiracy, attempted murder, fraud, forgery, and sabotage.
Grant Hale was sentenced separately after his cooperation.
Cole Ramsey received twenty-four years.
The compromised attorney received twelve.
Sophia received life in prison without parole, plus additional consecutive sentences.
Before sentencing, Ava and Chloe submitted written statements.
Ava’s statement was read first.
“You wanted me to believe being quiet made me good.”
“I was quiet because I was afraid.”
“I am learning that those are not the same.”
Chloe’s statement followed.
“You said you could become our mother after the wedding.”
“A mother does not need children beneath her feet.”
“A mother helps them stand.”
Sophia showed no emotion until the judge mentioned Laura.
Then she turned toward Ethan.
“You still chose me.”
The courtroom became silent.
She wanted the sentence to wound him more than prison.
Ethan stood when permitted.
“Yes.”
“I chose you.”
“I trusted you.”
“I gave you access to my daughters.”
“That failure belongs to me.”
Sophia’s smile returned.
Then Ethan continued.
“But my failure does not make your cruelty less deliberate.”
“It makes my responsibility greater.”
“I will not hide behind your deception.”
“And you will not hide behind my shame.”
Her smile disappeared.
The judge imposed the sentence.
As officers led Sophia away, she looked toward the twins’ empty seats.
They had chosen not to attend.
