CHAPTER 9 THE SHADOW ON THE YACHT

The photograph trembled in Mariana's hand.
She looked at it again.
And again.
Trying to convince herself that what she was seeing was impossible.
The yacht.
The ocean.
The same night that nearly ended her life.
But behind her family...
Behind Rodrigo.
Behind Elena.
There was another person.
A shadow standing near the rear deck.
Someone who had watched everything happen.
Someone who had let a mother and child fall into the freezing ocean.
And someone who had never appeared in the original footage.
"Who took this picture?"
Mariana's voice was barely a whisper.
Santiago took the photograph carefully.
His face became serious.
"This wasn't from the yacht cameras."
"How do you know?"
"Because the angle is impossible."
He pointed at the image.
"The official cameras were mounted above the deck."
"This picture was taken from inside the yacht."
Mariana stared.
"Inside?"
Gabriel stepped closer.
"Meaning someone was there."
Someone who was close enough to watch.
Someone who was hidden.
For years, Mariana believed the worst night of her life was simple.
Her family betrayed her.
Her father tried to kill her.
Her mother tried to kill her son.
But now she understood.
That night had layers.
Someone had planned everything.
Someone had moved pieces on a chessboard.
And her family...
The people she hated most...
May have only been pieces too.
Santiago looked at Gabriel.
"There is something you haven't told us."
Gabriel didn't answer.
Mariana immediately noticed.
"You know who that person is."
Silence.
"Don't lie to me."
Gabriel looked away.
Finally, he spoke.
"I have a suspicion."
"Who?"
Gabriel hesitated.
"The person in that picture..."
A pause.
"Was someone who worked for Alejandro."
Mariana frowned.
"Your father?"
Gabriel nodded.
"Someone who disappeared after Alejandro died."
"Why?"
"Because he knew the family's darkest secrets."
Meanwhile, across the city...
Rodrigo sat alone in his office.
The empire he built was collapsing.
The news channels were destroying his reputation.
His lawyers were calling nonstop.
But he ignored all of them.
Because something worse had happened.
Someone had returned.
The woman standing beside him looked out the window.
"You look nervous."
Rodrigo didn't answer.
"You should be."
He turned.
"Why are you here?"
She smiled.
"Because you failed."
His expression hardened.
"I protected this family for years."
"No."
She corrected him.
"You protected yourself."
Rodrigo walked toward her.
"You were supposed to stay hidden."
She laughed.
"You say that as if you didn't spend twenty years hiding your own crimes."
He stared.
"Who sent you?"
Her smile disappeared.
"You still don't understand."
A pause.
"I don't work for anyone."
She placed a folder on his desk.
"I own the reason your family exists."
Rodrigo opened it.
Inside was an old contract.
Signed decades ago.
His father's signature.
And another signature.
One that made Rodrigo's hands shake.
Because it belonged to the person he thought was gone forever.
Back at the hospital, Mariana finally confronted Santiago.
"You said you knew everything about my family."
"I knew many things."
"But not this?"
Santiago looked guilty.
"No."
She stepped closer.
"You were my father's security chief."
"You protected him."
Santiago nodded.
"I did."
"Then tell me the truth."
Her voice became stronger.
"How many secrets did you help bury?"
The question hurt him.
Because he knew she was right.
"I protected the wrong people."
"But I am trying to fix it."
Mariana looked at the flash drive.
"The footage wasn't enough."
"No."
Santiago looked at the photo.
"Because the person behind this has something bigger."
That night, Mariana couldn't sleep.
Every time she closed her eyes...
She saw the ocean.
Nico falling.
Her father's hands.
Her mother's cold expression.
Then she saw the shadow.
The person watching.
Waiting.
At 3:17 a.m., her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered immediately.
"Who are you?"
For several seconds, there was silence.
Then a woman's voice.
"You want the truth about the yacht?"
Mariana sat up.
"Who are you?"
The woman whispered:
"The person who tried to save you."
Mariana froze.
"What?"
"I was there that night."
The voice became emotional.
"I saw what they did."
"Then why didn't you help us?"
A pause.
The woman's answer was quiet.
"Because I was afraid."
Mariana tightened her grip on the phone.
"Who are you?"
The woman breathed in.
Then said:
"My name is Valentina."
Mariana froze.
Because she knew that name.
Valentina.
Her father's former assistant.
A woman who supposedly disappeared ten years ago.
A woman everyone believed was dead.
"Why are you calling me now?"
Valentina answered:
"Because the person who ordered your death knows I am alive."
Mariana felt a chill.
"Who ordered it?"
The line went silent.
Then Valentina whispered:
"The same person who killed Alejandro Salcedo."
Mariana stood frozen.
"That's impossible."
"No."
Valentina replied.
"It's the truth."
A pause.
"And Mariana..."
Her voice became urgent.
"You need to leave the hospital."
"Why?"
"Because they are already there."
Suddenly...
The lights in the hospital hallway went out.
The same darkness.
The same silence.
Mariana looked toward the door.
A shadow appeared beneath it.
Someone was standing outside.
Watching.
May you like
Waiting.
Then the door handle slowly began to turn.
