CHAPTER 14 THE MOTHER WHO CARRIED THE SECRET

The vineyard fell silent.

Nobody expected Elena Salcedo to appear.

Especially not like this.

Not with a weapon in her hand.

Not with tears in her eyes.

Not with the expression of someone who had finally run out of places to hide.

Mariana stared at the woman in front of her.

The same woman who had pushed Nico into the ocean.

The same woman who had watched her own daughter fall.

The same woman who had spent years protecting a lie.

And yet...

For the first time, Mariana saw something she had never seen before.

Fear.

Not the fear of being caught.

The fear of losing the last chance to tell the truth.

"Put the weapon down," Santiago said carefully.

Elena ignored him.

Her eyes stayed on Mariana.

"You hate me."

Mariana didn't answer.

Because there was no need.

Elena already knew.

"I deserve that."

The words shocked everyone.

Rodrigo's wife.

The woman who always appeared untouchable.

Was admitting guilt.

"I deserve every bit of your anger."

Mariana stepped forward.

"Then tell me why."

Her voice was cold.

"Why did you do it?"

Elena looked down.

"Because I was afraid."

Mariana laughed bitterly.

"Afraid?"

She pointed toward the hospital photo of Nico.

"You almost killed my son."

Elena closed her eyes.

"I know."

"And I will never forgive myself."

Gabriel stepped closer.

"Then start talking."

Elena looked at him.

The pain between them was obvious.

Two people who once loved each other.

Two people destroyed by the same monster.

"Rodrigo didn't create this nightmare."

She whispered.

"He inherited it."

Mariana frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Elena looked around the old vineyard.

"This family was rotten before Rodrigo was born."

She began to reveal the past.

Decades ago, Alejandro Salcedo built the empire through fear and control.

But Alejandro had one obsession.

Legacy.

He believed the Salcedo name had to survive at any cost.

So he created rules.

Rules that every generation followed.

No weakness.

No betrayal.

No outsiders.

And most importantly...

No one could challenge the family's power.

"When I met Gabriel," Elena said quietly, "I thought I had escaped that world."

Gabriel looked away.

"I thought I could have a normal life."

"But Alejandro found out."

Mariana listened carefully.

"What happened?"

Elena's eyes filled with regret.

"He gave Rodrigo an order."

A pause.

"Destroy Gabriel."

The room became silent.

"Rodrigo followed the order?"

Gabriel asked.

Elena nodded.

"At first."

"Then he realized something."

She looked at Mariana.

"He liked having power."

Rodrigo wasn't only protecting the family.

He was becoming worse than the people before him.

He manipulated companies.

Destroyed enemies.

Controlled information.

And when Gabriel's children were born...

He saw them as threats.

"But why Isabella and me?"

Mariana asked.

Elena looked at her.

"Because Alejandro left a hidden inheritance."

Everyone froze.

"What inheritance?"

Elena swallowed.

"The original Salcedo trust."

Santiago immediately understood.

"The true ownership."

Elena nodded.

"The person who carried Gabriel's blood had legal control over everything."

Mariana looked confused.

"So Rodrigo couldn't own the empire."

"No."

Elena whispered.

"He could only pretend."

A cold wind moved through the broken windows.

Mariana finally understood.

Her existence was never the problem.

Her existence was the threat.

Because she was proof that Rodrigo's empire was built on stolen power.

"Then why did you help him?"

Mariana asked.

The hardest question.

Elena looked at her daughter.

"Because Rodrigo threatened you."

Mariana froze.

"He said if I didn't obey..."

She stopped.

Gabriel stepped forward.

"What did he threaten?"

Elena whispered:

"Your brother."

Mateo's expression changed.

"What?"

"Rodrigo knew where you were."

Mateo went silent.

"He told me he would destroy both children if I didn't cooperate."

Mariana shook her head.

"So you chose him."

"No."

Elena's voice broke.

"I chose fear."

A tear fell.

"And that was my greatest mistake."

Nobody spoke.

Because the truth was complicated.

Elena was guilty.

But she was also a prisoner.

A prisoner who made terrible choices.

And Mariana didn't know whether to hate her...

Or pity her.

Suddenly, Elena looked toward the entrance.

Her expression changed.

"They know I'm here."

Santiago turned.

"Who?"

Elena whispered:

"The people behind Rodrigo."

Everyone became alert.

"What people?"

Before she could answer...

The vineyard lights shut off.

Again.

The same darkness.

The same pattern.

A voice echoed through the building.

"Elena."

Everyone froze.

The voice was calm.

Controlled.

Familiar.

"After all these years..."

A pause.

"You still don't know when to stay silent."

Mariana recognized the voice.

But she couldn't believe it.

"No..."

Santiago looked at her.

"Who is it?"

Mariana slowly whispered:

"It can't be."

The figure stepped out of the darkness.

An older man.

Walking slowly.

Holding a cane.

Everyone stared.

Because the man standing before them was supposed to be dead.

Gabriel's face turned pale.

"Father..."

Mariana felt the ground disappear beneath her.

Alejandro Salcedo.

The founder of the empire.

The man whose name haunted generations.

Was alive.

Alejandro smiled.

"I see my family finally found the courage to ask questions."

He looked at Mariana.

"My granddaughter."

A pause.

"You have caused quite a lot of trouble."

Mariana stared at him.

"You were dead."

Alejandro laughed softly.

"That is the first lesson of the Salcedo family."

He stepped closer.

"People believe whatever story we give them."

Then he looked at the weapon in Elena's hand.

"You always were weak."

Elena trembled.

"You destroyed everyone."

Alejandro smiled.

"No."

He looked at Mariana.

"She did."

Everyone froze.

Mariana's eyes narrowed.

"What are you talking about?"

Alejandro pointed toward her.

"Your mother tried to protect you."

"Rodrigo tried to control you."

"But the person who changed everything..."

A pause.

"Was you."

Mariana felt confused.

"Me?"

Alejandro smiled.

"Because before you were born..."

"I knew you would become the greatest threat to this family."

He placed a folder on the table.

A folder with Mariana's name.

Inside was a document dated twenty-eight years ago.

May you like

And the title made everyone freeze:

THE MARIANA PROJECT.
